SEMANTiCS 2019 – FIZ Karlsruhe organizes first Patent Text Mining & Semantic Technologies workshop

On September 12, 2019 the first workshop on Patent Text Mining and Semantic Technologies (PatentSemTech) will be held at FIZ Karlsruhe within the scope of the SEMANTiCS 2019 conference. The one-day workshop is organized joint-ly with Technische Universität Vienna.

The event deals with the development of new concepts and methods of text and data min-ing (TDM). Text and data mining methods help retrieve and analyze knowledge that was published in patents. In this context, FIZ Karlsruhe develops and operates information services, which support research and innovation in science and industry. Leni Helmes, Member of the Management Board/Senior Vice President IT, Development and Applied Research at FIZ Karlsruhe, emphasizes: “With new research approaches, we are facing the challenges posed by fast-growing data volumes and increasing demands on the analysis of patents. For example, we are working on methods of machine-learning, distributed processing for analyzing large amounts of data (big data analytics), and semantic indexing of patent full texts.”

    The workshop program

The one-day workshop will start with a keynote speech held by Anthony Trippe, Managing Director of Patinformatics LLC, and be continued with scientific lectures on topics like au-tomatic terminology recognition and patent landscaping. Patent landscaping provides a snapshot of the patent situation of a specific technology, either within a specific country, region, or globally. Patent Landscaping Reports can also be used to analyze the validity of patents based on data about their legal status.

The program will continue with a “Demo and Industry Talk” session, in which practice-orientated applications will be presented and discussed. Participants can then gain hands-on experience in an interactive tutorial session on patent landscaping. Another session is ded-icated to the topic “From A-Z, towards a patent text mining application”. The workshop ends with a fishbowl discussion to promote the exchange of data and know-how between science and industry.

Establishing a patent text mining community

The PatentSemTech workshop is not to remain a one-time event but to be further devel-oped into an active community in the medium term. Hidir Aras, TDM Project Manager at FIZ Karlsruhe, says: “It will initiate different activities such as webinars, training sessions and evaluations to support TDM for patent full texts and generate benchmark data for use cases.” FIZ Karlsruhe plans to continue the workshop together with the TU Vienna for an initial three-year period. Other supporters of the workshop are the European Patent Office, the Artificial Researcher-IT GmbH and Research Studio DSc.

The PatentSemTech workshop will be held in building 241 at FIZ Karlsruhe on the premises of KIT Campus Nord, Eggenstein-Leopoldshafen, Germany.

    About SEMANTiCS Conference
SEMANTiCS is an established knowledge hub where technology professionals, industry experts, researchers and decision makers can learn about new technologies, innovations and enterprise implementations in the fields of Linked Data and Semantic AI. Founded in 2005 the SEMANTiCS is the only European conference at the intersection of research and industry. This year's event is hosted by the Semantic Web Company, FIZ Karlsruhe – Leibniz Institute for Information Infrastructure, Fachhochschule St. Pölten Forschungs GmbH, KILT Compe-tence Center am Institut für Angewandte Informatik e.V. and Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam.

FIZ Karlsruhe – Leibniz Institute for Information Infrastructure is a not-for-profit limited liability company. As one of the largest non-academic information infrastructure institutions in Germany, we have the public mission to provide researchers and scientists with scientific information and to develop the appropriate products and services. To this end, we edit and index large data volumes from manifold sources, develop and operate innovative information services and e-research solutions, and carry out research projects of our own. FIZ Karlsruhe is a member of the Leibniz Association which comprises more than 95 institutions involved in research activities and the provision of scientific infra-structure.
