Relaxed and environmentally friendly from A to B: Joint project at TU Freiberg develops emission-free traffic concept

Luisa Rischer Pressestelle
Technische Universität Bergakademie Freiberg

The plan is to offer a low-cost rental service for cargo bikes and e-scooters suitable for everyday use, with which students of TU Freiberg and citizens will be able to travel comfortably and environmentally friendly on campus and in the university city in the future. The first test phase will already start this year.

"If, for example, a student comes home from the semester break and stands at the train station with his luggage, he should find so-called city boxes with electric cargo bikes there. With the help of an app, he can borrow an electric bicycle from these boxes and drive to his apartment on campus - completely emission-free and very uncomplicated," says Prof. Dr. Jana Kertzscher from the Institute of Electrical Engineering at the TU Bergakademie Freiberg, explaining her idea.

She has been working on the practical implementation since the beginning of the year together with partners from science and industry in the BMBF-funded project "SteigtUM". The background is the increasingly high emission levels and the critical parking situation in city centres. According to a study by the Federal Environment Ministry, as many as 79 percent of motorists can imagine doing without their cars more often. The scientists want to test whether this works in Freiberg over the next three years.

Stations with five e-bikes and five e-scooters each are planned at the train station, on the campus and at shopping facilities in the city centre. "This will enable us to optimally integrate the new system into the public transport network and create new, individually tailored and efficient mobility offers," adds Prof. Dr. Matthias Klingner, Director of the Fraunhofer Institute for Transportation and Infrastructure Systems IVI in Dresden. The latter is contributing his idea for an innovative transport system (MoVeN) to the project, which is also intended for commercial use.

The electrically supported load bicycles are being developed by the Institute for Mechanical Engineering at the TU Freiberg. The Freiberg Institute for Computer Science is working on the rental and partial service together with the Fraunhofer IVI Dresden and the projectionists from Hanover. The parking concept with the contactless charging system is being implemented at the Institute of Electrical Engineering. Further project partners are the TU Chemnitz, the apromace data systems GmbH from Freiberg and the TU Braunschweig. The concept is also supported by the University City of Freiberg, the SWG Freiberg, the Stadtwerke Freiberg and the Studentenwerk.

The Federal Ministry of Education and Research is financing the research and test phase until May 2023 with about 4.9 million Euros within its funding priority "Individual and adaptive technologies for a networked mobility phase2".
