Prof. Dr. Claudia Lehmann has accepted the newly created Professorship for Digital Innovation in Service Industries at HHL Leipzig Graduate School of Management. In doing so, she will hold the first professorship at a German university to focus on this topic.
The professorship aims to develop methods and tools to harness innovative technologies and transform them into new digital business models. Transferring the research findings into practice is of major importance in this context. The professorship is meant to contribute to supporting German companies from the service industry to discover and utilize digitalization for themselves.

Professor Dr. Claudia Lehmann, LF Group Professorship for Digital Innovation in Service Industries (HHL), comments,

"Digitalization has caused markets and customer needs to change and competition to increase — particularly for German companies. Our goal is to develop services which were unimaginable before without the new technology. And then we will take things one step further by also preparing suitable business models for these new services.
The question of how to include employees in the transformation towards digitalization and keep them in the picture is particularly important to me."

Prof. Dr. Stephan Stubner, Dean of HHL Leipzig Graduate School of Management, says,

"Professor Lehmann is the number one expert for the development of service innovation. In my opinion, her teaching strategy is groundbreaking regarding the structure and content of service engineering in digital transformation. As an industrial engineer and economist, she is able to combine both technical and economic aspects. We are thrilled to have Professor Lehmann join our faculty as a valuable asset."

The new professorship is sponsored by the LF Group, hence the name LF Group Professorship for Digital Innovation in Service Industries. Markus Rosenbaum, CEO of the LF Group, comments,

"Sponsoring this professorship is a major investment for us as a medium-sized enterprise. We are making this investment with utter conviction because we know that the future cannot be shaped single-handedly. This process requires innovation ecosystems which join various competencies, players, academia and practice. The professorship will research digital innovation and business models and develop solutions for practice. As a result, it will open up brand-new opportunities for companies with regard to their evolution and Leipzig, which was recently named a beacon of innovation policies, will continue to expand its innovation infrastructure."

Example of digital innovation and the application of new technologies
One example of innovation in the digital world is the Truepic app which was developed by a U.S. startup to verify photos. This app can prevent manipulation of photos which users might place on Airbnb, for instance. The software stores metadata such as location and date as a water mark in the so-called blockchain, indicating clearly whether or not changes were made to the photo. The basic version of this app can be used for free. The business model behind it is a sophisticated version of the app which is offered at a charge.
