This year’s alternative to the Lindau Meetings postponed until 2021

In the last 69 years, this has never happened: no Nobel Laureates in Lindau in the summertime – but nevertheless the world of science, as well as the interested public, will be looking to the Lake Constance Island tomorrow, Sunday 28 June at 16 hrs. CEST. At that time, Countess Bettina Bernadotte af Wisborg, president of the Council, will officially open the Online Science Days 2020 in Lindau. Anja Karliczek, the German Federal Minister of Education and Research, and Bernd Sibler, the Bavarian Minister of State for Science and Art will send greetings around the world. The virtual exchange anticipated between roughly 40 Nobel Laureates and over 1,000 young scientists can become reality.
Minister Anja Karliczek emphasises: “The Lindau Nobel Laureate Meetings are flagships for the research and scientific landscape in Germany. They demonstrate how crucial international exchange in science is. The challenges on our planet – the corona pandemic reminds us of this – are so vast that we can only overcome them with a joint global effort. When researchers’ perspectives and insights are gathered, powerful solutions can be found globally. I am firmly convinced of this, which is why the Federal Government is pleased to support the annual Lindau Nobel Laureate Meetings and, in this exceptional year, the Online Science Days 2020.”
The last months have confirmed that the Lindau Nobel Laureate Meetings are a very special experience for the invited young scientists – but also for the participating Nobel Laureates. There was great regret world-wide that the 70th Lindau Nobel Laureate Meeting (Interdisci¬plinary) and the 7th Lindau Meeting on Economic Sciences had to be postponed to 2021 due to the corona pandemic but this decision was also accepted with understanding.
Countess Bettina Bernadotte, president of the Council for the Lindau Nobel Laureate Meetings: “With the Online Science Days, we are keeping the science flag flying high in a different way this year. Especially under such exceptional circumstances scientific exchange is essential. Even this year we are providing a platform where scientists can interchange across borders. Naturally, not in person like in Lindau, but still a contribution to international science diplomacy.”
Online Science Days facilitate professional exchange
During the last weeks, one could follow the growing curiosity about the Online Science Days 2020. In times of social distancing regulations, which also restricted the daily scientific routine, this event is a welcome opportunity for professional as well as personal exchange – in as much as it is possible online. Last weekend the Online Sciathon 2020 brought together 48 project groups of young scientists, who applied themselves to innovative ideas. The best evaluated results of the 48-hour competition will also be presented during the Online Science Days – from 11:30 – 12:30 hrs. CEST every day.
The preoccupation with the crisis from a natural sciences and economic perspective has naturally also shaped the rest of the programme. The interdisciplinary line up on the panels with scientists from the fields of Physics, Chemistry, Physiology or Medicine, as well as economics, will lead to a comprehensive discussion about current issues.
Furthermore, the pressing questions about climate change or the future configuration of scientific dissertations comprise additional thematic focal points. Since 2018, the Lindau Nobel Laureate Meetings have been preparing the “Lindau Guidelines” for an open, fair and sustainable science. Their adaption and execution had to be postponed as well until 2021.
The programme starts with the kick-off on Sunday afternoon, 29 June, and lasts until 1 July 2020, daily from 06.00 – 18.00 CEST. This makes it possible for scientists and interested persons from all time zones around the world to participate.
In Anticipation for the Meetings in Lindau in 2021
One thing is already clear, the Online Science Days are an anticipation of the 70th Lindau Nobel Laureate Meeting taking place from 27 June – 2 July 2021 and the 7th Lindau Meeting on Economic Sciences taking place from 24 – 28 August 2021. At that time, the digitally established contacts and discussions can be turned into personal and, especially, real human connections here in Lindau.

Offers for Journalists
With an accreditation for the Online Science Days 2020 journalists have access to the entire programme and can follow the exchanges between the Nobel Laureates, young scientists/economists as well as Lindau Alumni. About the Lindau Nobel Laureate Meetings
Since their beginnings in 1951, the Lindau Nobel Laureate Meetings have evolved into a unique international forum for scientific exchange. The annual meetings foster the exchange of different generations, cultures, and disciplines. The meetings focus alternately on physics, chemistry, or physiology and medicine – the three natural science Nobel Prize disciplines. An interdisciplinary meeting revolving around all three natural sciences is held every five years and the Lindau Meeting on Economic Sciences is held every three years. Within the framework of various declarations (2015 on climate change, 1955 against the use of atomic weapons), the scientists have, again and again, played a part in bringing political pleas to public debate.
It was two Lindau physicians, Franz Karl Hein and Gustav Wilhelm Parade, who approached Count Lennart Bernadotte af Wisborg to jointly develop and implement the idea – in 1953 young scientists were invited to join the meetings. Roughly 35,000 students, doctorates and post-docs have participated since then. The Meeting itself is experienced literally only once but the young scientists belong permanently to the Lindau Alumni Network, are connected with each other through that network, and are ambassadors of scientific dialogue.
The Lindau Nobel Laureate Meetings are active year-round with their “Mission Education” highlighting the meaning of the knowledge society and supporting science and research. This goal serves for the development of their in-house online mediatheque into a learning platform for teaching materials for schools among other things.
