Universität Siegen

Dr. Lamia Messari-Becker, a professor of civil engineering at the University of Siegen, is a new member of the Club of Rome, a non-profit organization dedicated to sustainability.

Professor Lamia Messari-Becker from the University of Siegen has become a member of the Club of Rome. The international NGO based in Switzerland was founded in 1968. It advocates action to achieve a sustainable future for humanity. Its 100 members are a select group of notable scientists, business leaders, high-ranking civil servants and former heads of state from around the world. Messari-Becker is a researcher and lecturer in building technology and building physics at the University of Siegen. She was nominated by the former Co-President of the Club of Rome, Prof. Dr. Ernst-Ulrich von Weizsäcker. She was invited to join by the Presidents, Sandrine Dixson-Declѐve and Dr. Mamphela Ramphele.

Messari-Becker's interests, research and projects focus on the sustainable design of buildings and cities. She promotes a holistic view of sustainability in building and urban planning and argues for a greater integration of these aspects into sustainable development strategies. She also advises politicians in forums such as the Federal Ministry of the Interior's Expert Group, and up until 2020 she sat on the Council of Experts on Environmental Issues.

Messari-Becker was born in Morocco and achieved her Diploma and PhD in civil engineering at the Technical University of Darmstadt. Between 2009 and 2014, she worked for an international engineering company, leading projects in countries including Austria, France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Norway, Switzerland and Turkey. The last member of the Club of Rome with Moroccan roots was the internationally well-known sociologist, economist and future researcher Prof. Dr. Mahdi Elmandjra.

"My view of the many challenges in resource saving, access to education, energy, water, healthcare and other goals for sustainable development is strongly influenced by my international professional experience as well as my origins", says Messari-Becker. She emphasizes that these problems can only be solved by accepting their complexity and jointly developing an understanding of different needs. "I want to contribute my understanding and international experience, and I'm looking forward to interaction with my fellow committed members."
