Open-access.network project launches Open-Access-Forum during Open-Access-Tage 2020
HANNOVER, 17 September 2020 – The open-access.network joint project launches the Open-Access-Forum on Thursday, 17 September 2020 during the Open-Access-Tage 2020 (Open Access Days). The forum, unique in the German-speaking world, is a new offering to bring together and expand the Open Access community, facilitating discussions revolving around Open Access. Anybody interested can register for free with the moderated forum, enabling them to open up new topics and ask or answer questions. The forum can be accessed via this link: https://forum.open-access.network/.
The forum, offered in addition to the existing information platform open-access.net, is intended as a platform for the Open Access community to network and share knowledge. ”The objective of the forum is to ensure that scientists wishing to publish Open Access can meet their needs for information, discussion and networking,” explained Jessika Rücknagel, project team member at open-access.network. “At the same time, by facilitating the public communication of questions, answers and suggestions for networking, we establish an openly accessible knowledge store.” Staff involved in the open-access.network project supervise the platform content and moderate discussions. The central moderation team ensures that all questions are answered, even when the community does not come up with a quick response. The team moderates discussions, sorts information and gets even more experts involved in Open Access. “The offer is aimed at all individuals who are keen to play an active role in the Open Access community,” stated project team member Helene Brinken of TIB ‒ Leibniz Information Centre for Science and Technology, “as well as at people wishing to benefit from the community’s expertise or to share ideas and information.” TIB coordinates the new service, and Göttingen State and University Library (SUB) is responsible for providing technical support. “The forum also has a feedback function, enabling users to comment on the content and technology of the platform,” remarked Sibylle Nägle, project team member from SUB Göttingen. “In this way, we are able to respond quickly to users’ wishes and problems.”
The Open-Access-Forum represents an important milestone in establishing a sustainable and comprehensive information portal for networking and for transferring expertise in the German-speaking Open Access community. Besides TIB and SUB, other institutions with Open Access expertise that are involved in the open-access.network joint project are the Communication, Information, Media Centre (KIM) of the University of Konstanz (joint project lead), the Helmholtz Open Science Office, the Open-Access-Büro Berlin (OABB) and Bielefeld University Library. The project, funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF), creates an independent network and information hub for the Open Access community. The new web portal will be launched in the first half of 2021.
