New Master's degree program "Cybersecurity" at Saarland University

Cybersecurity is a topic that concerns everyone. People manage their health and banking data via the Internet, critical infrastructures such as the energy supply are controlled by computer systems, and administrations at all levels are networked with each other. All these applications heavily rely on IT security. The demand for experts who act competently in this area is therefore greater than ever before. To accommodate this, Saarland University is launching "Cybersecurity", a new English-language master's program specializing in security in information technology, starting in the winter semester of 2021/22. The application deadline is June 15, 2021.

The new degree program at Saarland University is offered in close cooperation with the Saarbrücken CISPA - Helmholtz Center for Information Security. "Saarland University is a hotspot for computer science. Research and teaching here are at the top international level," says Christian Rossow, professor responsible at Saarland University and researcher at the Helmholtz Center for Information Security. "Students of cybersecurity additionally benefit from the scientific excellence of CISPA. Our researchers are globally networked cybersecurity experts and contribute significantly to the teaching of the new degree program," he continues.

The master's program 'Cybersecurity' prepares students equally for a career in research as well as in industry and thus complements the existing master's program 'Entrepreneurial Cybersecurity', which focuses on preparing students for founding a startup in the field of IT security. Students of the new program can specialize in different sub-areas of cybersecurity such as cryptography, privacy, software security, computer systems and networks, formal methods or legal aspects. In addition to that, students participate in cutting-edge research as part of their courses and as student assistants, or gain important professional experience through internships that can be credited towards their studies.

To start studying in the newly established degree program, a bachelor's degree in computer science or a similar subject is required. Dedicated knowledge of cybersecurity is not expected. Depending on their prior knowledge students can create their own class schedule right from the start. The program can be taken up both in the winter semester and the summer semester.

The new degree program is embedded in the research landscape at the 'Saarland Informatics Campus'. The German Research Center for Artificial Intelligence (DFKI), the Max-Planck-Institute for Informatics, the Max-Planck-Institute for Software Systems, the Center for Bioinformatics as well as the departments of Mathematics and Language Science and Technology are located in close vicinity to each other on the campus of Saarland University. 800 scientists and around 2100 students from more than 80 nations conduct research, teach and study at the Saarland Informatics Campus.

    Information on application:

For the winter semester 2021/22, the application deadline has been extended to June 15, 2021 as an exception due to the current situation. For all upcoming semesters, the regular application deadlines of May 15 for a start in the winter semester and November 15 for a start in the summer semester apply. Applications can be submitted online application portal of Saarbruecken Computer Science at https://cysec.uni-saarland.de/master/cybersecurity/#apply.
