TU Berlin: Entrepreneurial Skills in Teaching

Stifterverband awards TU Berlin EUR 175,000 to establish entrepreneurial skills in teaching

As part of an "Entrepreneurial Skills" program, Technische Universität Berlin has been awarded 175,000 euros in funding by the Stifterverband für Deutsche Wissenschaft e.V. for its project "Deepening of Entrepreneurial Skills @ Green Chemistry." The Entrepreneurial Skills program is a joint funding program of the Dieter Schwarz Foundation and Campus Founders, Allianz SE, and Stifterverband, which aims to establish entrepreneurial skills in university curricula. A total of 69 universities from 15 federal states applied for project funding in a two-step process. Four universities have now been selected to receive funding for two years.

The project "Deepening of Entrepreneurial Skills @ Green Chemistry" aims to establish such skills in university learning. The project's initial focus is on chemistry degree programs. These are particularly well-suited due to the high degree of research and technical infrastructure they require as well as the generally low interest in entrepreneurship among students compared to other degree programs. TU Berlin's project will adapt courses offered by the Chair of Entrepreneurship and Innovation Management (FG EIM) and the Centre for Entrepreneurship (CfE) to the chemistry degree programs in collaboration with the Chemical Invention Factory (CIF). In addition to practical laboratory work to develop prototypes and MVPs (Minimal Viable Products, i.e., minimally viable products for the rapid achievement of initial customer feedback), the adapted courses will also include the use of unused patents and issues from praxis partners in the chemical industry. Focus is placed on green chemistry, as the “Chemie-Wende” or transformation to a circular economy based on regenerative raw material sources offers enormous innovation potential. Additionally, TU Berlin – not least due to signing the Green Chemistry Commitment – views the promotion of green chemistry innovations as part of its social responsibility. It aims to achieve this by fostering students' interest in entrepreneurship as well as improving the technology transfer of chemical inventions. In a second step, the program developers plan to establish an additional qualification, a so-called micro-credential degree. These supplementary degrees, which are the subject of current discussion in the EU, are designed to support efforts to make course schedules more flexible and to modularize study programs. The grant from Stifterverband is an important step to further establishing TU Berlin as a pioneer in the implementation of green chemistry.
