EMBO - excellence in life sciences

The new grantees will establish their laboratories in the Czech Republic, Poland, Portugal, and Turkey

19 January 2022 – EMBO announces that six life scientists have been selected to receive installation grants. The aim of the scheme is to attract group leaders to the participating countries.

“We are delighted to welcome these talented scientists,” says EMBO Director Fiona Watt. “EMBO promotes excellence in the life sciences throughout all parts of Europe, and beyond. We look forward to the contributions of the grantees in the countries they moved or returned to as well as to the wider scientific community.”

The new EMBO Installation Grantees will establish one laboratory in the Czech Republic, two in Poland, one in Portugal, and two in Turkey. Three of the six grantees are female and three are male. All have spent at least two consecutive years outside the country in which they are setting set up their laboratory in the four years preceding their application.

Each group leader receives 50,000 euros annually for three to five years and can also apply for additional grants of up to 10,000 euros per year. Further benefits include access to training courses, core facilities at the European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL) in Heidelberg, Germany, and networking opportunities. The grantees become part of the EMBO Young Investigator Network which consists of EMBO Young Investigators, Global Investigators, and Installation Grantees.

Funds for EMBO Installation Grants are provided primarily by the funding agency or ministry of each host country, which is a member state of the EMBC, to strengthen the life sciences there. This year’s grants are supported by the Ministry of Education, Youth and Sports of the Czech Republic, the Ministry of Science and Higher Education of Poland, the Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia of Portugal, and the Scientific and Technological Research Council (TÜBITAK) of Turkey.

The next application deadline is 15 April 2022. More information on EMBO Installation Grants, including eligibility criteria and the application process, is available here.
