The Council for the Lindau Nobel Laureate Meetings confirmed the selection of the young scientists over the weekend and today informs the 611 applicants worldwide about their invitation to the 71st Lindau Nobel Laureate Meeting (Chemistry). Due to the pandemic, many of the young scientists had to wait more than two years until they will finally enter the Lindau Inselhalle. But this moment is now within reach: From 26 June – 1 July, the participants will be able to meet each other and around 30 Nobel Laureates in person. The organisers of the meeting are working to enable as many scientists as possible to participate on site. The meeting will take place within the framework of the COVID-19 regulations applicable in June.
Countess Bettina Bernadotte, President of the Council for the Lindau Nobel Laureate Meetings: "We are confident that the 71st Lindau Nobel Laureate Meeting will again enable personal encounters after a long period of online cooperation. Participating in a Lindau Meeting is a unique experience for the participants and leads to long-term contacts between scientists."
Participants From Two Application Processes
The Lindau class of 2022 consists of the chemistry scientists who were selected for the interdisciplinary 70th Lindau Nobel Laureate Meeting (last year online). "It is important to us that the scientists of this cohort now also have the opportunity to experience the 'Lindau Spirit' on site", says Countess Bernadotte. The greater part of the current participants (about two-thirds) applied just last fall, so the traditional number of about 600 can now be invited. The final decision on the selection was taken by the Scientific Chairpersons of the 71st Lindau Meeting, Council Members Wolfgang Lubitz, Valeria Nicolosi and Pernilla Wittung Stafshede.
In its meeting, the Council also dealt with the effects of Russia's war against Ukraine. Most recently, the Lindau Nobel Laureate Meetings – against the backdrop of the "Mainau Declaration 1955" initiated by Otto Hahn – had supported a Call for Peace which was introduced by the Max Planck Society and signed by 150 Nobel Laureates as of today. The Council has decided to suspend institutional cooperation with the partners in Russia and Belarus until further notice. At the same time, efforts are being made from Lindau to maintain individual contact with the recently selected scientists. Among the young scientists now invited are three from Ukraine.
"From the very beginning, the history of the meetings stands for encounters between scientists, including in the sense of international understanding. Anyone who is prepared to deal with other opinions or conflicts in a fundamentally peaceful manner is welcome in Lindau", explains Bettina Countess Bernadotte on behalf of the entire Council. This is also the background to a code of conduct that all meeting participants must accept. According to this code, it will not be tolerated that participants advocate for war, aggression or the use of force.

Invited scientists who are unable or unwilling to travel to Lindau due to Covid-19 restrictions in their countries will have online access to most of the programme sessions. The Lindau team has gained extensive experience in running online events over the past two years. This ensures a smooth integration of online participants. The same online access will be available for the 7th Lindau Meeting on Economic Sciences, which will take place 23 – 27 August 2022.
