7th Lindau Meeting on Economic Sciences: 427 Young Economists from 69 Countries

    - Two selection processes for Lindau economics class of 2022
    - About 20 Economics Laureates expected – more than ever before
    - Meeting planned on-site in Lindau – like chemistry meeting in June
    - Key visual of the economics meeting referring to natural experiments
    - Media accreditation prospectively to start at the end of May

Today, the Lindau Nobel Laureate Meetings inform 427 young economists about their invitation to the 7th Lindau Meeting on Economic Sciences. This year, young economists from two selection processes will meet in the Lindau Inselhalle from 23–27 August. For those researchers originally selected in 2020 it took two years due to the pandemic to finally experience the Lindau Spirit. Together with economists from an additional selection process last autumn, they will now network with each other and exchange experiences with around 20 Laureates of the Sveriges Riksbank's Prize in Economic Sciences in Memory of Alfred Nobel.

Economics Laureates of the Last Few Years Expected to Participate

"We are delighted about this great response and hope to be able to welcome five Laureates who have never been to Lindau before," says Countess Bettina Bernadotte, President of the Council. With Joshua Angrist, David Card, Paul Milgrom, Richard Thaler and Robert Wilson quite a few of those having been awarded the "Nobel Prize in Economics" recently have confirmed their attendance. In addition to their research, the meeting programme will include topics such as "Social Change and Social Media" as well as "Economics and Politics of War and Sanctions". The programme concept and the selection of the young economists was guided by the Scientific Chairpersons Economics of the Council, Torsten Persson and Klaus M. Schmidt (members of the Council) and Antoinette Schoar.

The Council’s decision from spring in view of the effects of Russia's war against Ukraine applies to both the Meeting on Economic Sciences and to the Chemistry Meeting at the end of June: institutional cooperation with partners in Russia and Belarus will be suspended until further notice. At the same time, efforts are being made from Lindau to maintain individual contact with the selected young economists/scientists.

Most recently, the Lindau Nobel Laureate Meetings – against the backdrop of the "Mainau Declaration 1955" initiated by Otto Hahn – supported a Call for Peace by 150 Nobel Laureates, which was initiated by the Max Planck Society. This is also the background to a code of conduct that all meeting participants are obliged to accept. According to this code, it will not be tolerated that participants advocate for war, aggression or the use of force.

Participants of the 7th Lindau Meeting on Economic Sciences:
427 young economists from 69 countries
69 % addressed by the pronoun "he", 30 % as "she", 1 % as "they”
    Youngest participant: 23 years

The aim of the organisers is to realise on-site participation in the Meeting on Economic Sciences for as many scientists as possible. The meeting will take place within the framework of the COVID-19 regulations applicable in August. Invited scientists who cannot or do not wish to travel to Lindau because of restrictions in their countries will be able to access most of the programme online. The Lindau team has gained extensive experience in running online events over the past two years. This ensures a smooth integration of the virtual participants of the 7th Lindau Meeting on Economic Sciences.
