Workshop zur Kryptographie am Fraunhofer-IGD

Dipl.-Betriebswirt (FH) Joachim Jakobs Presse und Öffentlichkeitsarbeit
Fraunhofer-Institut für Graphische Datenverarbeitung IGD

    ANKUENDIGUNG
    ---------------

Ort: Fraunhofer IGD, Rundeturmstr. 6 , Darmstadt
    Datum: 3./4. Dezember 1998
    Beginn: 10.30h

Auf der Veranstaltung wird das IGD das Projekt CIPRESS
    (Cryptographic Intellectual Property Rights Enforcement

    Anhang.

Die Teilnahme am Workshop ist kostenfrei.
    Vorhergehende Anmeldung ist erforderlich!

The CIPRESS system is a joint development of Mitsubishi
Corporation, Tokyo, Japan and the Fraunhofer Institute
for Computer Graphics based in Darmstadt, Germany for secure
content distribution of digital data. The purpose of the
system is to provide an integrated solution for pressing
problems facing both industrial and government users, namely
how to protect sensitive or copyrighted material from
illegal distribution and usage. At the same time the
solution will be transparent for legitimate users; the use
of common productivity applications is not to be impeded at
all by the system. Even if entire storage devices or
computers are stolen, no illegal access to the confidential
data is possible. Copyrighted material is protected by the
patented re-encryption technology which prevents illegal
distribution and facilitates exact monitoring of usage
trails. Even illegal analog audio and video recordings as
well as e.g. printouts of images can be traced back to the
perpetrator due to the use of patented digital watermarking
    technologies.

From a technical vantage the CIPRESS system presented on the
workshop runs on standard PC hardware and basically consists
of lower layer extensions to the Microsoft Windows NT 4.0
operating system providing the functionality without
affecting the usability for general purpose productivity
applications. User authentication, encrypted storage and
exchange of multimedia data and documents as well as tracing
mechanisms are essential features of the system.

Since CIPRESS is a joint Japanese-German project, it is not
hampered by U.S. export restrictions; CIPRESS users can be
assured that maximum strength cryptographic mechanisms
accepted in the worldwide research community without
trapdoors and key escrow mechanisms are used. Find further
