Interior architecture students from Berlin International are supporting the Federal Foreign Office (FFO) in designing space ideas for the 44th Antarctic Treaty Consultative Meeting 2022 (ATCM), which is taking place in Berlin from May 23 to June 2, 2022. As part of this successful collaboration, a specific design assignment was integrated into the course "Design Project 1", which is part of the regular curriculum of the MA Interior Architecture/Interior Design program at the Berlin International University of Applied Sciences (BI).
Supporting the White Continent
As part of the course "MA Design Project 1" BI students immersed themselves in the fascinating world of Antarctica and the pressing issues it faces. At the beginning of the semester, Dr. Manfred Reinke, long-time head of the Antarctic Treaty Secretariat, shared his knowledge and experience with the students. He provided deep insights into the history of Antarctica's discovery and exploitation and today's efforts to preserve its environment and ecosystems in a complex geopolitical context.
During ATCM 2022, delegations from several countries and organizations will gather in Berlin to discuss and decide on the future of Antarctica. As Germany hosts this year's ATCM at the Estrel Conference Center in Berlin, students were asked to design the functional, spatial and visual layout of the conference.
Designing the Interior of a Conference
The design of the conference is of high importance to enhance and support its effectiveness. Therefore, the students developed an interior concept and design supported by thorough research. They also needed to understand and address the specifics and complexity of the theme from an interior design perspective.
The venue for the annual Antarctic Treaty Consultative Meeting (ATCM) is divided into two larger modules with different spatial focuses. The MEETING & CONFERENCE area serves different purposes, but is mainly the part where ATCM participants elaborate their results. This module contains two main elements: meeting rooms and several offices. The FOYER & CORRIDORS area is mainly the part where ATCM participants can socialize, take breaks, have informal conversations and get inspired. The two areas needed to be connected with a visual identity, including signature elements, key visuals, logo and others.
Dr. Miriam Wolter, Head of of the Division for Special Areas of International Law, expressed her enthusiasm and gratitude for the professional design work and presentations of BI Master students. The Federal Foreign Office awarded three teams among the participating students of the Interior Architecture/Interior Design Master's program at Berlin International.
International design students for urgent global concern
In their design solutions, the students addressed the needs of a large international conference as well as its visual identity. Using often spectacular scenographic strategies, they expressed the beauty and importance of Antarctica as well as the urgency of cooperation and sustainable solutions for this century.
"I couldn't think of better contributors to this task than our international students from more than 90 countries and the ATCM, with its tireless commitment to protecting this vital part of our planet," said Prof. Adrian von Starck, professor in the Faculty of Architecture and Design at Berlin International. "It is this young generation that strongly feels the need for a response and brings the necessary communication skills to raise global awareness and trigger action," added Prof. Adrian von Starck.
The student designs will be exhibited and presented at the ATCM conference on May 26, 2022.
