The anthology "A New Beginning? Spatial Planning and Research in Europe between 1945 and 1975" edited by Detlef Briesen and Wendelin Strubelt is published by Campus Frankfurt/New York. The book presented here is the basis for a major scientific symposium that the editors will organise in the course of 2022. The conference and this publication are supported by the ARL – Academy for Territorial Development in the Leibniz-Association.
About the book
Spatial planning attempts to improve conditions in a society or its parts through the forward-looking ordering and shaping of its space. Therefore, spatial planning is controversial both in terms of its scientific-technical approach and its socio-political legitimacy. The anthology deals with this contentious history, focusing on Europe from the end of the Second World War to the late 1970s in order to find out how the development of spatial planning has actually proceeded then. To this end, the editors have gathered contributions from countries with influential planning traditions but are also looking at current trends and the Europeanisation of spatial planning and policies during the last decades.
