    - Three Laureates of recent years for the first time in Lindau
    - 250 young economists on site – 80 participating online
    - Public streaming of selected programme sessions
    - Meeting programme with abstracts

This afternoon, the 7th Lindau Meeting on Economic Sciences begins in Lindau on Lake Constance. How valuable personal encounters are these days was proven at the end of June by the 71st Lindau Nobel Laureate Meeting (Chemistry). In the same spirit young economists and Laureates of the Sveriges Riksbank Prize in Economic Sciences in Memory of Alfred Nobel will meet until Saturday for professional and personal exchange.

At 14 hrs CEST, Countess Bettina Bernadotte af Wisborg, President of the Council, will open the meeting in the Inselhalle: "We are glad to finally be able to continue the tradition of our economics meetings, which were established in 2004 and could not be held on site in 2020 and 2021 due to corona. The first-time participation of several Laureates from recent years shows Lindau's high standing also among economists."

Among others, Paul R. Milgrom and Robert B. Wilson, who were awarded in 2020 for their work on auctions, will participate. They will kick off the scientific programme with their lectures and a panel discussion. Joshua D. Angrist is one of the Laureates of 2021 and will give his first Lindau lecture on Wednesday morning on an example of natural experiments. In addition, Richard H. Thaler will not miss the opportunity to attend the first Lindau economics meeting since he received his prize in the field of "behavioural economics" in autumn 2017.

Further key topics of the meeting are crises of the past, present and future (wars, climate change), digitalisation and society (e.g. in the context of social media or the workplace), the methods of microeconomics, and economic policies, including country analyses. The academic programme was designed by the scientific chairpersons for economics at the Lindau Meetings: Professors Torsten Persson, Stockholm University, Klaus M. Schmidt, Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität Munich (both members of the Council) and Antoinette Schoar, Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

They have also planned several programme sessions for "Next Gen Economics", in which about 60 young economists will get the opportunity to present their research on a large stage, including Laureates in the auditorium. Until Saturday, 27 August, the participating Laureates and young economists will have ample opportunity for intensive exchange with each other. A variety of programme formats such as Laureate Lunches and Science Walks also foster personal dialogue.

    Online Programme for Participants Worldwide

Some of the invited economists have been looking forward to the meeting for two years. They were selected for the event originally planned for 2020, which was then postponed due to the pandemic. Now they have the chance to meet their idols in person and experience the 'Lindau Spirit' on site.

For participants and guests who are still unable or unwilling to travel due to Covid-19, the programme will be broadcast live via an online platform. Five Laureates will also participate online (Lars Peter Hansen, Bengt R. Holmström, Daniel L. McFadden, Vernon L. Smith, Robert B. Wilson). The young economists can ask questions remotely and thus participate actively in the programme. The streaming of social events that serve networking purposes also contributes to this.

For the interested general public, selected programme sessions will also be broadcast live on lindau-nobel.org.
