Although the pandemic is not over yet, the current situation allows European public health experts to meet in person for the first time since 2019. The four-day conference in Berlin will focus on what lessons Europe can learn from the worst health crisis in recent history. How can our health systems become more resilient to such existential threats? How can we identify and prepare for future crises at an early stage? And what consequences must we draw from this acid test for the overall improvement of our health care systems that we will then also benefit from in more normal times?
Media representatives are warmly invited to attend the conference, discuss with the experts and arrange for one-on-one interviews. The following topics may be of particular interest:
• The Berlin statement [1] of the European Public Health Association (EUPHA) and the European Public Health (EPH) Conference. The report calls for more equitable health care worldwide, urges governments to adopt a genuine, evidence-based approach to assessing the pandemic, and demands a willingness to promote innovation in the health sector and to implement new findings. The authors also emphasize the crucial role of health care workers, who they say were abandoned all too often during the pandemic and whose working conditions need to be improved.
• The presentation of the WHO report on the situation of the health and care workforce in Europe [2]. The report highlights that by training workers, accelerating the use of digital technologies, supporting mental health, and providing financial and practical assistance (such as childcare), some EU countries have succeeded in motivating and retaining healthcare workers. Rapid changes in policy were necessary to achieve this. The WHO recommends learning from these efforts and proposes a set of ten measures. (Thursday, 12:45 – 13:45, room Beta 1)
