Interdisciplinary battery research at the Bavarian Centre for Battery Technology (BayBatt) at University of Bayreuth

    The Bavarian Centre for Battery Technology (BayBatt) at the University of Bayreuth celebrates the inauguration of its new premises in the presence of Minister President Dr. Markus Söder. On four floors and an area of around 7,000 square metres, the building offers plenty of space for research and development of safe, sustainable and intelligent energy storage systems - in close cooperation between scientists and companies. The central task is interdisciplinary research at the interfaces of materials science, electrochemistry, engineering, information technology and economics, as well as university teaching on the topic of battery storage.

    "Bayreuth is now the capital of battery research", with these words Minister President Markus Söder opened the Bavarian Centre for Battery Technology at the University of Bayreuth on Friday, 2nd December 2022. "The BayBatt is of crucial importance as a national reference centre for the battery of the future. The latest forms of state-of-the-art batteries are developed here - for electromobility, for example. With industrial partners, an ingenious cluster for battery technology is being created." The Minister President saw for himself the new BayBatt premises in the Bayreuth industrial area, which the Free State is supporting with funds from the High-Tech Agenda.

    "Interdisciplinarity is what sets us apart, leaving silos behind and linking science and business. That is why we are the right place for a Bavarian Centre for Battery Technology with international appeal," said University President Prof. Dr. Stefan Leible. He thanked the state government for its commitment to promoting BayBatt as part of the High-Tech Agenda Bavaria: "In doing so, you are showing that cutting-edge research is not only available in metropolitan areas and are thus strengthening Bavaria as a science location overall."

    The Minister President was able to see the expertise of the researchers for himself on site and live: representatives of the university gave the invited guests from politics, science and industry an insight into the research work of the BayBatt and gave them a tour of the building. BayBatt professors and doctoral students presented research objects. With its interdisciplinary research approach at the interface of electrochemistry, materials science, engineering, computer science and economics, the BayBatt relies on an innovative, holistic concept. In line with this orientation, BayBatt members come from four different faculties (physics, chemistry, business informatics, engineering) and cover all stages of the battery research value chain.

    Sustainable, safe, intelligent: developing energy storage systems of the future

    "Our goal is to research and develop battery storage systems for mobile and stationary applications in electric vehicles and devices, in buildings and grids in a functional, systematic and comprehensive way. We are working on the battery of the future" says Prof. Dr.-Ing. Michael Danzer, Director of BayBatt. Electromobility, energy transition and security of supply are current issues that represent a major challenge for industry, research and society. "This is precisely where BayBatt comes in and is dedicated to researching and developing new battery technologies for sustainable energy supply solutions," says Danzer.

    At several stations, the Minister President learned what is being worked on at BayBatt: Battery systems, battery cells, synthesis, and analytics of battery materials. The range of current research was demonstrated: the "Reallabor Wunsiedel" project, in the context of which BayBatt has access to data from a battery storage unit and uses it for research on stationary storage units, the topic of "remanufacturing" using the example of an e-bike or "hybrid drives" using the example of a BMW. And finally, the Minister President met the Bayreuth Formula Student Team "Elefant Racing", which now builds self-driving battery-electric racing cars.

    At BayBatt, battery storage systems are to be further developed to become intelligent reliable safe, long-lasting, powerful and sustainable energy storage systems. To this end, the centre combines basic research in electrochemistry, materials science and engineering with the industrial use of the developed processes and models. The research work at BayBatt covers the entire spectrum of innovative battery technology. They range from molecular fundamentals to the structuring of electrodes and cell production to the use of batteries in networked energy storage systems.

    The range of disciplines, which is unique in Germany, is also reflected in the profiles of the participating chairs and their main research areas. Questions on future, improved recycling potentials are dealt with here just as much as the development of solid-state batteries based on sodium for more range and safety or aspects of modern battery management systems.

    Battery competence - made in Bayreuth

    BayBatt offers two dedicated battery-related Master's programmes - a novelty in the German university landscape. With the English-language degree programme "Battery Materials and Technology" (M.Sc.) and the German-language degree programme "Battery Technology" (M.Sc.), the University of Bayreuth aims to train interdisciplinary experts to meet the enormous demand for qualifications. As further pillars of its training concept, BayBatt also relies on a graduate college and will in future also offer further training courses for relevantly pre-trained academic specialists.

    Another important factor for the success of innovative battery research is cooperation with companies along the battery production process chain. BayBatt sees itself not only as a contact for Bavarian industry, but also actively promotes projects in the areas of technology transfer and industrial cooperation for batteries. With the expected innovations, the BayBatt can be an incubator for new business models, start-ups, and spin-offs - combined with a significant economic structural effect for the region and the whole of Bavaria.
