Renewed increase in intrapreneurship activities in German companies

Jennifer Opel Pressestelle

For the third time in a row, the Institute for Entrepreneurship & Innovation has published the Intrapreneurship Monitor. This year, intrapreneurship activities of German companies increased again. More than half of the German companies carry out intrapreneurship activities at the employee or organisational level. The information and communication technology (ICT) sector is leading the way.

Intrapreneurship is seen as the beacon of hope for promoting entrepreneurial thinking and action among employees, closing the gender gap and leading entrepreneurship in a forward-looking direction. The Institute for Entrepreneurship & Innovation has dedicated itself to this promising topic for the third time in a row with the Intrapreneurship Monitor, the largest intrapreneurship study in Germany. A total of 657 companies from Germany were surveyed in 2022 on how they have established intrapreneurship activities in their company and which obstacles and challenges had to be overcome in the process. A special focus was placed on the ICT sector.

On average, 54% of the companies surveyed practice intrapreneurship activities at the employee level and 51% at the organisational level. Companies from the ICT sector use intrapreneurship most frequently, with 77% at the employee level and 73% at the organisational level. This sector is certainly also driven by the constant digitisation and thus makes use of intrapreneurship activities to develop a variety of new business models. Customer expectations mean that the ICT sector has to and wants to fulfil them quickly and purposefully.

Surprisingly, the automotive sector brings up the rear in the survey and has the lowest share of intrapreneurship activities. Just 20% rely on the employees' own potential, while externally directed intrapreneurship activities at the organisational level are recorded at 27%. These figures may be evidence that automotive companies focus more on incremental innovations and less on radical ones.

"The Intrapreneurship Monitor 2022 clearly shows how intrapreneurship activities are used depending on the sector. Companies can now use the results from surveys and interviews to create structures that involve employees in innovation processes at an early stage," says Prof. Dr. Rodrigo Isidor, Chair of Human Resource Management & Intrapreneurship.

For the Intrapreneurship Monitor 2022, 657 companies from Germany were surveyed under the scientific direction of Prof. Dr. Rodrigo Isidor, Chair of Human Resource Management & Intrapreneurship at the University of Bayreuth, and Prof. Dr. Matthias Baum, Chair of Entrepreneurship and Digital Business Models. In addition, several interviews were published that provide information about the individual intrapreneurship behaviour of companies and tips on how to recognise potential intrapreneurs.

"Intrapreneurship activities offer a high potential to strengthen the German economy for the requirements of the next years and to drive new innovations," says Prof. Dr. Matthias Baum, Chair of Entrepreneurship and Digital Business Models.

The Intrapreneurship Monitor serves as a starting point for companies to analyse the immense innovation potential of employees and organisations and thus contribute to the improvement of innovation activities. On the one hand, it provides the basis for the research area of intrapreneurship, and on the other hand, companies can derive findings for practical applications of their intrapreneurship activities.

The Intrapreneurship Monitor 2022 is published for the third time in a row and is conducted and published by the Institute for Entrepreneurship & Innovation at the University of Bayreuth in cooperation with the August-Wilhelm Scheer Institute for Digital Products and Processes gGmbH. The study is conducted annually and is the largest of its kind in Germany.
