Professional exchange in Las Vegas: Experts present the cutting edge in German medicine

The German Society for Orthopaedics and Trauma (DGOU) is representing Germany as a guest nation at the American Congress of Orthopaedics and Trauma Surgery, the largest such congress in the world. Germany is a world leader in this field, prompting colleagues from America to invite our medical experts to attend so as to further intensify exchange of expertise in this cutting-edge field. The Annual Meeting of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS 2023 Annual Meeting) is taking place from 7 - 11 March 2023 in Las Vegas.

“We are very proud to have been invited, as this demonstrates the relevance of German orthopaedics and trauma surgery on the world stage. This will give us the opportunity to demonstrate our exacting, high standards as well as the scientific work we carry out in orthopaedics and trauma surgery,” said DGOU president, Prof. Dr. Maximilian Rudert. He is the Medical Director at the König-Ludwig-Haus Orthopaedic Hospital, and a tenured professor in orthopaedics at the University of Würzburg.

In addition to presenting their clinical expertise and research, the team will also be presenting and discussing current trends in German orthopaedics and trauma surgery. “We are very curious when it comes to professional exchange on the subject of shared challenges also faced by other countries, such as how to attract new professionals to the field, or on the evaluation of the results of surgery in registers,” reported Prof. Dr. Steffen Ruchholtz, Deputy President of the DGOU and executive director of the Centre of Orthopaedics and Trauma Surgery of the Giessen and Marburg University Hospital.

Guest nations are given the opportunity to present on the subject of orthopaedics and trauma surgery in their country. This includes organising a symposium event, taking part in a World Opinion Forum, as well as having their own reception. The German delegation of experts is also taking part in the AAOS President’s Reception to allow exchange between opinion leaders from the field. The German doctors will also host two poster events, as well as publishing an article in the congress’ publication “AAOS Now”.

“This invitation to the world’s largest congress in the field of orthopaedics and trauma surgery is therefore extremely significant as it offers an opportunity for further success in presenting our own content, developments, and scientific work, demonstrating the high standards in Germany’s quality of care in Orthopaedics and Trauma Surgery. We are seeing the fruits of many years of close collaboration and exchange,” said DGOU board member, Prof. Dr. Carsten Perka, who is medical director of the Centre for Musculoskeletal Surgery at the Charité University Hospital in Berlin.

Looking beyond the presentations of our own content, however, a key focus of the event will be to gain new expertise. The DGOU board member, Prof. Dr. Paul A. Grützner, medical director at the BG Hospital in Ludwigshafen, is hopeful that Germany can benefit from a great deal of new expert knowledge: “We are particularly interested in the contents offered by the cutting-edge medicine from the US, both in terms of patient care and approaches to training. One thing is certain: we have a great deal to learn from one another. That said, the two countries’ social systems are set up in entirely different ways, and the financial means available at the different levels of care vary a great deal, and this must be taken into account”.
