The Technical University of Dresden and Fraunhofer Institute for Photonic Microsystems IPMS have reached concrete agreements on scientific cooperation with several universities in Taipei and Hsinchu in Taiwan in the presence of Saxony's Science Minister Sebastian Gemkow.

Partner institutions of the TU Dresden are the National Taiwan University (NTU) and the National Taiwan University of Science and Technology (Taiwan Tech) in Taipei as well as the National Tsing Hua University (NTHU) in Hsinchu. In the future, the Fraunhofer IPMS will cooperate with the National Yang Ming Chiao Tung University (NYCU).

Among other things following agreements were agreed upon,
    - joint research activities in the field of microelectronics and semiconductor technologies
    - establishment of joint study programs
    - exchange of teaching staff and joint lectures
    - mutual facilitation of admission of qualified students
    - exchange of researchers
    - student exchange program
    - implementation of joint research projects
    - conducting lectures and organizing symposia and conferences
    - exchange of academic information and materials

Science Minister Sebastian Gemkow had previously signed an arrangement with the National Applied Research Laboratories (NARLabs) of the Taiwanese Ministry of Science to deepen cooperation between the two high-tech regions of Saxony and Taiwan.

Commenting on the agreements reached by TU Dresden and Fraunhofer IPMS, Gemkow said:
"With the agreements, the Saxon-Taiwanese cooperation is concretely filled with life. I am convinced that both, the microelectronics cluster in Saxony and the high-tech cluster in Taiwan, will benefit noticeably from the networking, both in technology development and in academic exchange. Both will in turn strengthen the industrial structures and help to maintain the leading position in semiconductor products from Europe and Taiwan. I thank all those involved for their great commitment."

The Rector of TU Dresden, Professor Ursula M. Staudinger said afterwards:
"TU Dresden as a university of excellence and one of the most popular German universities for international students further strengthens its international student exchange and international cooperation in research and teaching through these partnerships."

Dr. Thomas Kämpfe from Fraunhofer IPMS adds:
"The conclusion of the cooperation agreement with the National Yang Ming Chiao Tung University (NYCU) is an important step for Fraunhofer IPMS. We gain a strong research partner in the country that produces the most advanced semiconductors in the world. Joint research projects, publications and the exchange of scientific personnel are planned in particular with the International College of Semiconductor Technology at NYCU. We aim to collaborate closely in microelectronics research, especially in the area of memory development and reliability studies."

    Background:
Together with representatives of Saxony's scientific community, Science Minister Sebastian Gemkow visited the Republic of China (Taiwan) from April 18 - 20. The aim is to strengthen cooperation in the field of microelectronics research and to deepen relations between the scientific institutions of the two countries. The Minister was accompanied by the Rector of the TU Dresden, Prof. Ursula M. Staudinger and other representatives of the university as well as representatives of the Fraunhofer Institute for Photonic Microsystems IPMS.
