Meeting the challenges of the times with art, design and music

Melisa Berktas Presse- und Öffentlichkeitsarbeit
Hochschule für Künste Bremen

Hochschultage of the University of the Arts (HfK) Bremen: July 8th–9th, 2023

Exhibitions, concerts, performances, installations – the HfK Bremen open house days highlight current trends in art, design and music. On July 8th, from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m., and on July 9th, from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m., the tour of the HfK will take place in Speicher XI and Speicher XI A. Admission is free.

The intersection of art, politics, philosophy, design and science shows the potential of the HfK. The students of the University of the Arts Bremen are creative, future-oriented and critical actors. They meet the challenges, opportunities and crises of our time through artistic developments, interventions and design projects. What they do has a radiating effect on the city and society – they stimulate critical thinking, start dialogues and give impulses for change.

This is particularly visible during the open house days: with an interdisciplinary approach and by experimenting with different materials, media, technologies and working methods, exhibition concepts, installations, performances, lectures, fashion, films and video artworks as well as concert programmes have been created that address topics such as sustainability, mobility, solidarity, digitisation, health or even the energy transition. Re-thinking and re-designing topics is part of artistic training and artistic reflection. The students' perspectives invite the visitors to question their own point of view.

Every year, between three and six thousand visitors take part in the discoveries in Speicher XI and now also in the new building complex Speicher XI A in Bremen’s Überseestadt, meeting budding artists, designers and musicians and exploring the studios, workshops and ateliers.

The open house days take place indoors and outdoors. They bundle the perspectives of the entire university community and showcase the artistic practices, musical diversity, discourses and projects of the HfK Bremen in all their facets. For prospective students, the Hochschultage also offer detailed information and advice about the courses on offer and the application and admission process.

About the University of the Arts Bremen / Hochschule für Künste Bremen (HfK)

Around 1.000 students from more than 50 countries, 76 professors, 86 staff members in administration and over 150 teaching associates make the University of the Arts Bremen (HfK) a vibrant place.

The HfK is a university of seeming opposites. While deeply rooted in the region, the institution is extremely international in its basic orientation. The HfK is spread out over a number of locations throughout the city with significant differences among them, ranging from classicist to floating to contemporary. The HfK is an art university and a university of music at the same time. These parameters form the foundations of the university and create a framework that allows to strengthen artistic development among its students on a collective, as well as on the individual level.

The range of studies offered include Fine Arts, Integrated Design, Digital Media, as well as Musical Education for Artists and Teachers. Since 2020, the HfK also offers a post-graduate programme of study, an art- and science-based PhD programme with a special focus on Integrated Design and Digital Media.

Open courses, shared conduct of exams, as well as work shops, studios and projects on specific themes all are focussed on fostering dialogue and collaborations. With some 400 events annually the HfK is a pillar of cultural and communal life in the City of Bremen
The relationships among members of the university community, their multi-facetted collaborations, the close knit support provided to students by faculty and staff, as well as the plethora of regional and international cooperations help students grow into strong and distinct personalities. All of this produces works with high impacts on society at large.
