In the recently published Shanghai Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU), the University of Bonn has ranked as one of Germany’s top four universities and in the top ten EU-wide, taking 67th place in the list of the world’s leading universities. Bonn thus moved up nine slots since last year on the worldwide ranking list.
In Germany the University of Bonn ranked fourth after the University of Heidelberg and Munich’s two universities. These four Universities of Excellence are the only German universities in the world’s top 100.
In four of the six ranking indicator categories for Germany, Bonn lands within the top five. Bonn has also made gains, some quite significant, in the categories of Nobel and Fields Medal-winning alumni, published Nature and Science articles and total publications.

The Shanghai Ranking, which has now been published every year since way back in 2003, focuses on research. Six indicators are applied for the Ranking, including academic publications and citations and high-profile awards like the Nobel Prize and Fields Medal, to gauge the relative performance of 1,000 universities. Forty-six German universities made it onto this year's overall list.
