FIZ Karlsruhe – Leibniz-Institut für Informationsinfrastruktur GmbH

Prof. Dr. Wolfram Horstmann, former director of the Göttingen State and University Library (SUB) in Lower Saxony, will take over as President & CEO of FIZ Karlsruhe - Leibniz Institute for Information Infrastructure on January 1, 2024, succeeding Sabine Brünger-Weilandt.

Karlsruhe, October 11, 2023 — The shareholders' meeting of FIZ Karlsruhe has appointed Prof. Dr. Wolfram Horstmann as the new President & CEO. He will succeed Sabine Brünger-Weilandt, who is retiring after more than 20 years. During her term of office, the former scientific and technical information center was successfully transformed into today's interdisciplinary networked, internationally renowned Leibniz Institute for Information Infrastructure, which successfully faced the strategic challenges of the digital transformation at an early stage.

Wolfram Horstmann has been director of the Göttingen State and University Library (SUB), a renowned research library and high-profile interface between research and infrastructure, since 2014. He has also been teaching as an honorary professor at Humboldt University in Berlin since 2017. From 2012 to 2014, he was Vice Director at the Bodleian Libraries of the University of Oxford with a focus on digital library and information technologies. Wolfram Horstmann is very well networked and volunteers in numerous important committees on a national and international level.

The chairwoman of the Supervisory Board and the shareholders' meeting of FIZ Karlsruhe, Regierungsdirektorin Marion Steinberger from the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF), said on the occasion of the upcoming assumption of office: "I am very pleased that we have succeeded in winning Prof. Dr. Wolfram Horstmann for FIZ Karlsruhe. In his career to date, he has been very successful in dealing with the further development of digital research infrastructures for scientific data and services as well as with the field of Open Science, and he has many years of experience in executive positions. The retiring President & CEO Sabine Brünger-Weilandt has made FIZ Karlsruhe one of the top addresses for scientific information infrastructures over the past 20 years and has positioned it for the future. Wolfram Horstmann is the ideal person to shape the further strategic development of this important Leibniz Institute within its highly dynamic environment."

Prof. Dr. Wolfram Horstmann is looking forward to the new tasks: "I find an excellently positioned institute, which I would now like to lead into a next development phase together with my colleagues and our partners. The strategic goals of FIZ Karlsruhe are ambitious: The portfolio is to be further diversified, research expanded, and products and services developed further towards open, networked platforms.I hope to contribute to the future successes with my experience and skills and am very much looking forward to this both exciting and challenging new task."
