TU Dresden launches new Excellence Center for Innovation, Transfer and Entrepreneurship "TUD|excite"

Claudia Kallmeier Pressestelle
Technische Universität Dresden

The new "TUD Excellence Center for Innovation, Transfer and Entrepreneurship - TUD|excite" will be officially launched today with a ceremony on the TU Dresden campus and numerous prominent guests from science, politics and industry. Headed by Prof. Andreas Pinkwart – Chair of Innovation and Technology Management and long-time Minister for Science and Economy in North Rhine-Westphalia – it bundles TU Dresden's activities and services around knowledge and technology transfer, patents and spin-offs.

"Through TUD|excite, we are contributing to advancing TU Dresden as the leading institution for science-driven innovation and entrepreneurial thinking in Europe," Prof. Andreas Pinkwart says. "We support our researchers in finding practical applications for their research results and assist them in their journey from securing and exploiting intellectual property rights to start-ups."

TUD not only stands for excellent research, it also holds the most patents of any university in Germany, setting the pace for transfer and entrepreneurship. Each year, around 100 new inventions are patented. It was only in September that three TUD professors received the UNIPRENEURS Founders Award , the highest award for fostering entrepreneurship in higher education and research.

"Knowledge and technology transfer is one of the core tasks of our university alongside research and teaching," says TU Dresden Rector Prof. Ursula Staudinger. "With the new TUD Excellence Center for Innovation, Transfer and Entrepreneurship, we are creating a unique facility for all TUD members and for our business partners under one roof. It will strengthen TUD's innovative power and the link between science and industrial application in the long term."

    About TUD|excite

The Excellence Center for Innovation, Transfer and Entrepreneurship (TUD|excite) is a central interdisciplinary unit at TU Dresden. It combines core fields of action all in one location: the management of patents and other matters relating to intellectual property rights, the support of research-based innovation projects on their way to application, strategic partnerships with companies, the support of start-ups as well as training and continuing education relating to transfer.

TUD|excite is organized into six units:

    - excite|PATENTS manages the entire IP process from the invention to the IP rights, and develops IP strategies
    - excite|INNOVATE coordinates and supports the transfer of excellent research results and intellectual property of TU Dresden into practical applications
    - excite|STARTUP bundles information, qualification, consulting and support services for students and researchers who are interested in founding a company
    - excite|TALENTS raises awareness among students and staff for transfer and start-up topics and shows them opportunities for their own projects
    - excite|FUTURELAB fosters research and innovation in the fields of technology transfer and entrepreneurship
    - excite|FACILITATE optimizes processes and ensures excellent services at TUD|excite

    Ceremony on October 20, 2023

At the ceremony in the Schönfeld lecture hall starting at 4:15 pm, Prof. Andreas Pinkwart (Director TUD|excite), TUD Rector Prof. Ursula Staudinger, Minister of Science Sebastian Gemkow and the Minister of State for Regional Development Thomas Schmidt will be present. Moreover, there will be numerous researchers as well as representatives of start-ups, cooperation partners and business associations making an appearance.
