Between 6th and 12th of November 2023, research institutions across Germany invite the interested public to experience particle physics in a variety of ways
Where does our universe come from? And how did it develop after the Big Bang? What secrets does the cosmos hold? And what makes the Large Hadron Collider the "world machine"? During the countrywide Woche der Teilchenwelt (Particle World Week), you can find answers to these questions with the help of scientists. The member institutions of Netzwerk Teilchenwelt open their doors to share their enthusiasm for particle physics with the public.
Virtual visits to CERN, guided tours through the accelerator facilities of German research institutes, interactive workshops, movie nights and talks with physicists – all this is possible during the event week. "You can experience it online from the comfort of your own home or in person in cities like Bochum, Mainz or Würzburg. You will learn about the smallest building blocks of matter, about their interactions and how we can use the scientific findings," adds Prof. Michael Kobel, particle physicist at TU Dresden and project manager of Netzwerk Teilchenwelt.
The research institutions of Netzwerk Teilchenwelt have prepared more than 20 events with a wide range of formats and topics for visitors of all ages. Guests can spend a day as particle physicists analysing real data from CERN, explore particle accelerators and detectors, and discuss the origin and structure of the universe with experts.
About Netzwerk Teilchenwelt
Netzwerk Teilchenwelt (Network ‘Particle World’) is a project that communicates particle physics to young people and teachers, involving more than 30 research institutes throughout Germany as well as CERN. It is funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) as part of the KONTAKT2 project (Communication, Recruitment of Young Scientists and Sharing the Discoveries in the Field of the Smallest Particles with the General Public). The project is led by the TU Dresden. The German Physical Society (DPG) is the patron of Netzwerk Teilchenwelt.
