Maike Sippel, Professor at Konstanz University of Applied Sciences, is among individuals and higher education institutions that are inspiring continued progress toward environmental, social, and economic health. Sippel was awarded as finalist for her research on the effects of climate communication on sustainability in higher education.
The Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education (AASHE) announced “Key insights from climate communication – and how they can inspire sustainability in higher education” written by Maike Sippel as a finalist for a 2023 AASHE Sustainability Award in the Campus Sustainability Research category, recognizing outstanding scholarship in higher education.
To combat climate change and safeguard a liveable future, humanity needs fundamental and rapid social change. The purpose of Sippel's paper is to show, why and how climate communication can play an important role to nurture the public engagement needed for this change, and to explore, what higher education for sustainability can learn from climate communication.
The scientific evidence base on climate communication for effective public engagement is summarised into 10 key principles. Building on Sippel's perspectives and experiences as a professor, the impacts are transferred to the university context. The study includes suggestions for teaching, for research, for the third mission of universities, i.e., their contribution to sustainable development in society, and for campus design. Action recommendations include, for example, integrating local stories into teaching, practical relevance in research, communication training, or the establishment of a campus-wide sustainable infrastructure.
"The finalists for the 2023 AASHE Sustainability Awards showcase an exceptional dedication to advancing sustainability within their respective campuses. They collectively redefine the landscape of sustainability in higher education, setting a high standard for all institutions to follow. In the spirit of sustainability, it's important to acknowledge that each of these finalists is contributing significantly to a more sustainable future" said AASHE Executive Director Meghan Fay Zahniser.
"We congratulate Maike Sippel warmly on her research success. We are very pleased to have Maike Sippel, a globally recognized sustainability expert, locally, and to implement her scientifically grounded proposals at the Konstanz University of Applied Sciences. Our university aims to be climate-positive by 2030. Therefore, sustainability is also institutionally anchored in the executive board", as stated by Janna Heine, spokesperson for Hochschule Konstanz.
Winners will be celebrated during a virtual awards ceremony on Thursday, December 7, 2023, at 12 PM EST. To learn more about AASHE’s Sustainability Awards programs, please visit http://www.aashe.org/get-involved/awards/.
