Prof. Andreas Seekamp and Prof. Markus Scheibel are the new presidents for orthopaedics and trauma
The German Society for Orthopaedics and Trauma Surgery (DGOU) has a new leader in Prof. Dr. Andreas Seekamp, who has been President of the DGOU since 1st January 2024. He is Director of the joint Clinic for Orthopaedics and Trauma Surgery at the Schleswig-Holstein University Medical Centre on the Kiel campus. The Deputy DGOU President will be Prof. Dr. Markus Scheibel, who is Head of Shoulder and Elbow Surgery at the Schulthess Clinic in Zurich and Visiting Professor at the Centre for Musculoskeletal Surgery (CMSC) at Charité - Universitätsmedizin Berlin.
Prof. Dr. Dietmar Pennig, retired Senior Physician at the Clinic for Trauma and Reconstructive Surgery, Hand Surgery and Orthopaedics at the St. Vinzenz Hospital of the University of Cologne, will take over as Secretary General and Prof. Dr. Bernd Kladny, Senior Physician at the Orthopaedic Department of the Herzogenaurach Specialist Clinic, will be Deputy Secretary General.
In October 2023, the DGOU General Assembly elected Seekamp and Scheibel to head the specialist society for the term of office from 1st January to 31st December 2024. Both will also take over the presidency of their parent organisations in 2024. Seekamp is President of the German Trauma Society (DGU) and Scheibel is President of the German Society for Orthopaedics and Orthopaedic Surgery (DGOOC).
Brief Curricula Vitae
Andreas Seekamp (61) studied human medicine at Hanover Medical School, where he qualified as a doctor in 1987 and completed his doctorate in 1991. He started out as an assistant in surgical/trauma surgery training at the Centre for Surgery at Hanover Medical School (MHH) with a focus on the Trauma Surgery Clinic. This was followed by a research residency at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor in 1991/1992. In the following years, Seekamp completed advanced training in the fields of emergency medicine, surgery and trauma surgery. In 1997, he qualified as a university lecturer in trauma surgery, followed by several years as assistant medical director at the MHH's trauma surgery clinic. In 1998, he became Chief Emergency Physician for the state capital of Lower Saxony, Hanover. In the same year, he was awarded the Hans Liniger Prize from the DGU. From 2001, he was Senior Assistant Medical Director and Permanent Deputy Director of the Clinic for Trauma, Hand and Reconstructive Surgery at Saarland University Hospital. He was appointed Associate Professor of Trauma Surgery at Hanover Medical School, qualified as a specialist in orthopaedics and trauma surgery and obtained the additional qualification of Specialised Surgical Intensive Care Medicine. From 2005, he was Director of the Department of Trauma Surgery at the University Medical Centre Schleswig-Holstein (UKSH), Kiel Campus. He is currently Director of the joint Department of Orthopaedics and Trauma Surgery at the UKSH Kiel Campus, a position he has held since 2015. This was followed by additional qualifications in specialist trauma surgery, physical therapy and balneology as well as personal authorisation for the German Social Accident Insurance's (DGUV) Severe Injury Procedure (SAV) in 2014.
Seekamp is a member of various national and international specialist societies, including the DGU, the DGOU, the European Shock Society and the American Shock Society. In 2022/2023, he was President of the German Society of Surgery and was responsible for organising the German Surgical Congress (DCK) 2023. He is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons (FACS).
Markus Scheibel (48) studied medicine at the University of Leipzig from 1994 to 2001. After spending time abroad at the University of California, San Francisco, USA, the University of Cape Town, Cape Town, South Africa and Louisiana State University, New Orleans, USA, he completed his doctorate in 2002. From 2001 to the end of 2002, Scheibel worked as an intern at the ATOS Clinic in Heidelberg. In 2002, he moved to Munich to the Klinikum rechts der Isar and in 2004 to the Charité-Universitätsmedizin Berlin. There he qualified as a specialist in orthopaedics and trauma surgery in 2008 and habilitated in orthopaedics and trauma surgery in 2009. From 2010, Scheibel was Senior Physician at the Shoulder and Elbow Surgery Section and Assistant Medical Director in Traumatology at Charité - Universitätsmedizin Berlin. From 2012 to 2018, he held a W2 professorship for arthroscopy and sports medicine with a focus on shoulder surgery at the "Centre for Musculoskeletal Surgery" (CMSC) and the "Centre for Sports Science and Sports Medicine Berlin" (CSSB). In 2016, he completed additional training in specialised trauma surgery. In 2018, he became Head of Shoulder and Elbow Surgery at the Schulthess Clinic in Zurich and Visiting Professor at the CMSC of Charité - Universitätsmedizin Berlin.
Scheibel is a member of the DGOOC, DGU and DGOU as well as the European (SECEC) and American (ASES) Shoulder and Elbow Societies. He was President of the DACH Association for DACH Vereinigung für Schulter- und Ellenbogenchirurgie e.V. (DVSE – Association for Shoulder and Elbow Surgery) from 2015 to 2021 and has been Secretary General of the association since 2021.
Congress Presidents of the German Congress for Orthopaedics and Trauma Surgery
As presidents, Prof. Dr. Seekamp and Prof. Dr. Scheibel will also be congress presidents of this year's German Congress of Orthopaedics and Trauma Surgery (DKOU), together with the congress president of the Professional Association for Orthopaedics and Trauma Surgery (BVOU), Tobias Vogel. With more than 8,000 visitors, the DKOU is Europe's largest congress in its field. In 2024, it will take place in Berlin from 22nd to 25th October.
The DKOU in 2024 operates under the motto "Wanting the future. Making the future." The aim is to find answers to many of today's questions. How can medical and scientific progress be financed? How can the medical treatment of an ageing society be realised for everyone? How will we attract and retain the next generation? In short, how can orthopaedics and trauma surgery be designed and developed in a sustainable, forward-looking way for the benefit of patients? „At DKOU 2024, we want to show that it's not just about concepts, but also about action. If we want to continue to excel in patient care, science, education and training in the future, meaningful and innovative concepts must be developed jointly by all stakeholders, but also realised and implemented quickly," says Seekamp.
In order to make treatments future-proof, new treatment methods are being developed, proven concepts are being refined and training is being ensured. This must take place in the context of political framework conditions, against the backdrop of demographic change and global crises. "Our aim is to ensure that plans and concepts are actually implemented. At DKOU 2024, we want to put this into concrete terms with the help of topics and issues such as 'outpatient before inpatient', digitalisation and big data, as well as evidence in conservative and surgical treatment," says Scheibel. The congress offers the opportunity to find out about current developments in the the specialist area of orthopaedics and trauma surgery in 2024.
The work of the two new DGOU presidents, Prof. Dr. Seekamp and Prof. Dr. Scheibel, is being supported by the Executive Board and the General Board as well as 20 further committees.
