With a joint appointment, the DIPF | Leibniz Institute for Research and Information in Education and Humboldt-University of Berlin are strengthening research in the digital history of education. The new professorship for "Historical Educational Research with a Focus on Digital Humanities" has been filled by PD Dr. Katharina Vogel. The research professorship is located in the DIPF department BBF | Research Library for the History of Education. It aims to generate digital methods and tools to gain new insights into historical educational research and at the same time to critically reflect on them.

Katharina Vogel focuses not only on developing new methods and questions for researching educational knowledge, but also uses innovative approaches in visualizing and communicating these findings. "In pilot projects, I want to generate, test and reflect on customized technical solutions together with the specialist community and thus provide impetus for the digital history of education," explains Professor Vogel, adding: "It is also important to me to impart relevant academic skills in training courses and through my lectures at Humboldt University."

The BBF | Research Library for the History of Education provides a productive environment for the professorship. The DIPF department combines extensive research experience in the history of education with a high level of expertise in providing infrastructure services. Precisely at this intersection Vogel will be working. At Humboldt University of Berlin, her professorship is part of the Department of Education, Division for the History of Education.

"We are delighted to have Katharina Vogel, a recognized specialist in this still young field, as our new professor. This is a milestone in the digital transformation of the BBF, which we have been promoting for several years," says Prof. Dr. Sabine Reh, Director of the BBF and Deputy Managing Director of the DIPF. As an example of this engagement, she points out that the BBF, as part of the humanities and cultural studies data centers and research infrastructures, is firmly committed to the principles of "open science" and the promotion of digital strategies in research. "With the new professorship, the BBF will continue to establish itself as a leading center for historical educational research in Germany," says Reh.

Katharina Vogel comes from the University of Göttingen, where she has been working in the Department for General and Historical Educational Science since 2016. She completed her habilitation there in 2021 with a thesis on "Pedagogical knowledge spaces 1750 – 1850", testing already methods of the digital humanities. She studied educational science at the Technical University of Dortmund, where she also completed her doctorate. Since 2015, she has also been a member of the board of the Subdivision for Research on Educational Research of the German Educational Research Association (GERA).
