A decade of quantum advancements: IQST is committed to the integration of quantum science and technology

Dr. Jutta Witte Stabsstelle Hochschulkommunikation
Universität Stuttgart

The Center for Integrated Quantum Science and Technology (IQST) celebrates its tenth anniversary. Since its establishment, the IQST has positioned itself as a globally recognized science center that integrates fundamental research in quantum physics, resulting technological innovations, potential applications, and their social benefits in a comprehensive and interdisciplinary manner.

    Radically interdisciplinary quantum research

"The IQST was a global pioneer, advocating for radical interdisciplinary collaboration spanning physics, engineering, computer science, biology, medicine, and beyond" explains IQST spokesperson Prof. Stefanie Barz. Physics alone is reaching its limits in terms of further developing quantum technologies. Other disciplines are needed to come up with new approaches. "We have established quantum science as a strategic topic," says IQST spokesperson Fedor Jelezko. In addition to basic research, application-oriented research and transfer are now becoming increasingly important, for example in the areas of communication and sensor technology. The IQST has not only initiated many national and European research projects, it has also created international networks and "extremely successful start-ups".

    Plans for the next decade

In a collaborative interview commemorating the anniversary, the two IQST spokespersons reflect on the significant achievements of the past decade while simultaneously fixing their sights on the future. The center's future strategy centers around three core challenges. The researchers aspire to cultivate a fresh understanding of quantum systems, bridging disciplinary boundaries. They aim to use quantum sensor technology and quantum computing to tackle significant societal challenges, while also enhancing public awareness of quantum technologies and their potential. "We are part of an ecosystem that combines basic research, applied research and social developments," emphasizes Barz. "This is what sets IQST apart and we are committed to continuing to develop this."

    About IQST: 14 I 80+ I 125+ I 1000+

The IQST was founded in 2014 on the initiative of Professors Wolfgang Schleich (University of Ulm) and Tilman Pfau (University of Stuttgart). The Max Plack Institute for Solid State Research (MPI-FKF) in Stuttgart was also involved from the beginning. The aim of the IQST is to use synergies between physics, chemistry, engineering and biosciences to improve our understanding of nature and to develop innovative technologies based on quantum physics. The IQST now brings together researchers from various universities and institutions in Baden-Württemberg. Since its inception, the Center has generated 14 ERC projects, facilitated over 80 doctoral projects involving the training of more than 125 doctoral students, and produced over 1000 publications.

    Hilfe
