Against forgetting: Remembering persecuted Jewish doctors

Stefan Zorn Stabsstelle Kommunikation
Medizinische Hochschule Hannover

MHH and the Gastroenterological Society DGVS invite you to an event on March 4, 2024

Many doctors were among the millions of Jews who were persecuted, disenfranchised, deported and murdered during the Nazi era. The German Society for Gastroenterology, Digestive and Metabolic Diseases (DGVS) would like to commemorate these people with the "Against Forgetting" project. Hannover Medical School (MHH) is supporting the project. An event on March 4 at the MHH will focus on the life and fate of Walter Heinemann, a specialist in gastrointestinal diseases. Heinemann was born in Braunschweig in 1883 and was the first chairman of the Jewish community there.
Professor Dr. Heiner Wedemeyer, Director of the MHH Clinic for Gastroenterology, Hepatology, Infectiology and Endocrinology and President of the DGVS, invites all interested parties to attend. The event will take place on

    - Monday, March 4, 2024
    - 5.30 pm to 7.30 pm
    - Lecture hall G
    - Building J1, Carl-Neuberg-Str.1, 30625 Hanover.

The aim of the "Against Forgetting" project is to use the 1932/33 DGVS membership directory as a basis for recalling more than 120 Jewish members who were expelled from the specialist society within a very short time after the beginning of the Nazi dictatorship. They all attended the congresses, worked together as doctors in private practice or in hospitals and made a significant contribution to the scientific development of the still young field of gastroenterology. At the event, Dr. Harro Jenss, archivist of the DGVS, and Dr. Benjamin Kuntz, Museum at the Robert Koch Institute, will guide the audience through the memories. Dr. Elke Gryglewski, Managing Director of the Bergen-Belsen Memorial, will address the question of how the lessons of the Nazi era can live on in the present day. Representatives of the MHH and the DGVS will discuss the topic with the audience at a subsequent round table, which will be moderated by MHH doctor in training Dr. Friederike Klein.

In addition to Michael Fürst, President of the State Association of the Jewish Community, Professor Michael Manns, MHH President, and Professor Sabine Salloch, Head of the Institute of History and Philosophy at the MHH, will also take part in the round table. The MHH sees itself as a place of internationality and tolerance and speaks out against xenophobia, exclusion and racism. In January of this year, together with the entire German university medical center, it called for the defense of a free society against right-wing extremism and anti-democratic forces.

Participation in the event is free of charge. Pre-registration is requested at mehr.verena@mh-hannover.de.
Online participation is also possible. Interested parties can find the link on the website
