Leuphana offers continuing education program on sustainability in sport

Henning Zuehlsdorff Pressestelle
Leuphana Universität Lüneburg

The European Football Championship is over, the Bundesliga starts the season again, but the sustainability challenges remain: Sustainable stadium operations, reducing CO2 emissions from mobility, responsible merchandising. The new certificate course "Sustainability Management in Sport and Sports Organizations" at the Centre for Sustainability Management (CSM) at Leuphana University Lüneburg aims to provide students with comprehensive knowledge to enable them to shape amateur and professional sport in a responsible and future-oriented manner. The program, which is supported by the DFL Deutsche Fußball Liga, starts in October 2024.

The programme is aimed at employees of clubs and associations of all sizes and types of sport, interested specialists and managers from all sectors and organizations as well as current and former athletes. The program focuses on energy and mobility management as well as social issues such as human rights, inclusion, violence prevention and health. Among other things, students deal with the basics of sustainability management, sustainability assessment and communication as well as the topics of decarbonization, supply chains and circular economy. Sustainability expert Prof. Dr. Stefan Schaltegger heads the program.

Marika Bernhard, Head of Sustainability at the DFL, sees sustainability as an important topic for the future - in her own organization and beyond "With our commitment and the integration of sustainability into the licensing of the Bundesliga and Bundesliga 2, we are pioneers. Nevertheless, we are still a long way from reaching our goal: in order to increase the broad impact, it is essential to train and empower the relevant people in soccer and beyond. That's why we support the further education program offered by Leuphana."

The part-time online course at the Leuphana Professional School lasts six months and includes a two-day classroom course. Participants can access a learning platform with materials and collaboration tools from anywhere and at any time. The program concludes with a Certificate of Advanced Studies (CAS). The prerequisite for obtaining this certificate is a university degree and at least one year of professional experience. Participants without a university degree can receive certificates of attendance for attending the modules.

Applications are still possible until September 15, 2024. Prospective students can contact the course coordinator Benjamin Sachs (phone 04131/2234, benjamin.sachs@leuphana.de).
