The Institute of Science and Technology Austria (ISTA) hosts independent science journalists in its annual residency program, offering an opportunity to transform their own storytelling through exclusive access to leading researchers. Equipped with a generous stipend, selected professionals are granted access to the ISTA Campus near Vienna and its research community for three to six months, starting spring 2025. The call is open for applications until November 15, 2024.
The Institute of Science and Technology Austria (ISTA) is a PhD-granting research institute near Vienna. It was founded in 2009, with the bold ambition of providing the best possible environment to conduct innovative frontier research. It is dedicated to transcending traditional boundaries of disciplines, cutting-edge infrastructure, training the next generation of scientific leaders, and increasing the impact of science through science engagement as well as technology transfer. It is home to 82 research groups across all fields, and will double in size until 2036 to 150 research groups and more than 2,000 employees.
The ISTA Journalist in Residence program at a glance
- Duration: 3 – 6 months, starting spring 2025
- Stipend: €15,000
- Location: ISTA Campus in Klosterneuburg, near Vienna, Austria
- Criteria: Experienced journalists, independent of format
- Language: English is working language at ISTA, journalistic output may be in any language

- Fixed activities: at least three workshops offered to ISTA community and participation in the closing event of the residency, sharing the results of the work accomplished during the residency.

Application process
Interested candidates are invited to submit their applications until October 31, 2023, 11:59 PM (CET). It should include a CV, a letter of motivation, samples of their published work independent of format, and a proposal of planned activities, including 2-3 specific research groups they envision to engage with.
