Der Information Service Provider Clarivate annually measures which researchers are most frequently cited by their peers. Dr. Martin Löder from the Special Research Area (SFB) Microplastics has been listed for the third time. This list is considered proof of the research quality of scientists worldwide.
"I am delighted to receive this special award" says Löder. "But it wouldn't be possible without all my colleagues in the department and our technical staff, who do outstanding work in the laboratory." Löder is a staff member at the Chair of Animal Ecology at the University of Bayreuth, head of the SFB-Keylab for Microplastic Analysis, and a member of the Bayreuth Center for Ecology and Environmental Research (Bayceer).

We congratulate them on this proof of worldwide reputation and the impressive impact of their research work."
Dr Martin Löder has already been among the most cited scientists in the Environment and Ecology category for the past two years. ‘Highly Cited Researchers’ are scientists whose publications are most frequently cited by other scientists in scientific journals worldwide. Most frequently means here: The selected researchers have written several highly cited papers that rank in the top 1% of the most cited publications in their field over the last eleven years. These are determined by Clarivate, a renowned information services company. In addition to the sheer number of citations, a qualitative analysis and expert judgement are also taken into account, so that ‘Highly Cited Researchers’ is not just a summary but also a scientifically evaluated award.
‘The ranking published by Clarivate is a great success for Dr Martin Löder, whom I would like to congratulate on behalf of our Collaborative Research Centre Microplastics,’ says Prof Dr Christian Laforsch, spokesperson of the CRC Microplastics. ‘With great commitment and innovative ideas, he has advanced the identification of microplastics in various environmental media, demonstrated the spread of plastics in the environment and supported many students in their research work and in courses. I am very pleased that Dr Löder is receiving so much international attention.’
Since 2019, the DFG-funded Collaborative Research Centre 1357 Microplastics at the University of Bayreuth has been researching the formation, environmental transport and effects of the increasing global pollution of the environment by plastics and developing innovative solutions to counter the resulting ecological, health and economic risks. The close link between interdisciplinary basic research and problem- and application-oriented research should not only enable a well-founded risk assessment of microplastic particles depending on their diverse properties, but also pave the way for the development of sustainable plastics and also strengthen the transfer of knowledge to the public.
About Dr Löder
Dr Martin Löder is an expert in the sampling, extraction, purification and analysis of microplastics in environmental samples. In 13 years of research and development work, he has been involved in several national and international projects on the detection and quantification of microplastics in marine and freshwater ecosystems and on the ecological effects of microplastics. Martin Löder is a member of the DFG Collaborative Research Centre (CRC) Microplastics at the University of Bayreuth, which was launched in 2019, where his research now also focuses on the terrestrial realm, in particular on the transport mechanisms of microplastics in soils. Since 2023, he has headed the newly founded CRC - KeyLab Microplastic Analysis. Martin Löder was already honoured as a ‘highly cited researcher’ by Clarivate in 2022 and 2023.
