    DKOU 2025: Shaping progress together
Prof. Dr. Lohmann and Prof. Dr. Stöckle are the Presidents of the German Congress of Orthopaedics and Traumatology (DKOU) in 2025. Together with Dr Stefan Middeldorf, Congress President of the Berufsverband für Orthopädie und Unfallchirurgie (BVOU), they head up Europe’s largest congress in this field. The DKOU will take place in Berlin from October 28 – 31, 2025 and attracts more than 8,000 visitors every year.

The theme of the congress is: “Shaping progress together”. Healthcare policy faces major changes, particularly as a result of the German hospital reformation. This will lead to greater outpatient treatment as well as the concentration of services in fewer clinics. In turn, this will create the challenge of maintaining the excellent standards of elective surgical procedures and emergency care while also securing their funding. “At the DKOU 2025, we will be assessing the impact on the clinical aspects as well as on science and medical technology,” says Lohmann. “We hope that the reforms will ultimately lead to better care for our patients in the field of orthopaedics and trauma surgery. We want to contribute to this - and shape the progress together.”

In addition, orthopaedic and trauma surgeons are facing new challenges arising from the immediate political conflicts. “Public services have taken on a whole new meaning in recent years. We have to be prepared to treat more patients with war injuries,” says Stöckle. “To achieve this, we need to ensure that sufficient medical knowledge, capacities, and structures are available.”

The DKOU provides a platform for discussing current developments and future issues in orthopaedics and trauma surgery as well as the opportunities to develop solutions.
