Within the framework of the Global Forum for Food and Agriculture (GFFA), IAMO in cooperation with the Sino-German Agricultural Centre (DCZ) organised a panel discussion entitled “Innovative Biomass Energy Technologies and their policy implications” on 17 January 2025 in Berlin, Germany.
The panelists from science and business discussed the ways in which the use of biomass for energy can contribute to climate-friendly agriculture and global food security. In this context, the experts from China and Germany presented current research findings, new technologies, market mechanisms and political requirements. The aim of the event was to strengthen cooperation between China and Germany with regard to the utilisation of biomass resources, sustainable agricultural production methods and global food security issues.
Professor Dr. Michael Nelles, Scientific Managing Director of the Deutsches Biomasseforschungszentrum (DBFZ), reported on the areas in which biomass is already being used successfully and the potential that could arise for the energy industry in the future. Dr. Hao Hong, Deputy Director of the China Association of Rural Energy Industry (CAREI), pointed out the great demand for energy in China. Against this background, it is important to promote biomass energy and establish fixed standards and norms. Liuyu Zhang, General Manager of Wanhao Energy, presented the technological processes and clear advantages of utilising biogas. Yanping Zhang, an employee of the World Resources Institute (WRI) China, presented further case studies of climate-friendly utilisation of biomass, for instance in the scope of circular economy. She also emphasised the important contribution these applications make to global food security. The panelists agreed on the need for political measures and support for the use of biomass energy. The event was moderated by IAMO researcher Dr. Lena Kuhn.
