The European Space Agency (ESA) and the MIT Media Lab, in collaboration with Fraunhofer FIT and leading partners from science and industry, invite you to SpaceCHI 2025 – a conference dedicated to advancing human-computer interaction research at one of the most exciting and challenging frontiers: space exploration. The conference will take place on June 23-24, 2025 at ESA’s European Astronaut Centre in Cologne.
The field of space exploration is in the midst of a rapid transformation. Large government space agencies have set into motion ambitious plans for sending humans back to the Moon by 2027, with crewed missions to Mars projected to follow soon after. At the same time, the rise of the private space industry is leading to commercialization of low Earth orbit, creating new economic opportunities such as space tourism. More than 10,000 space technology companies are now active across the world, with the global value of the space economy firmly on track to surpassing €1 trillion by the end of the decade. Against this backdrop, the stage appears set for a future where space travel and habitation will become accessible to a far wider and more diverse range of people than ever before.
This new era of space exploration will be driven by a new generation of technologies designed to meet the evolving needs of a broader user base. To succeed, relevant research and development activities will have to become more accessible, involving stakeholders beyond the traditional aerospace engineering domains. In this technological landscape, factors such as holistic user experience, long-term physical and mental well-being in extreme and confined environments, and human-AI collaboration in safety-critical scenarios will take center stage.
In 2020, the MIT Media Lab launched the annual SpaceCHI workshop as a platform to advance this line of research. In close collaboration with the Fraunhofer Institute for Applied Information Technology FIT and other partners, SpaceCHI has now expanded into a full conference and will be held in Europe for the first time at ESA's European Astronaut Centre in Cologne on June 23–24. Featuring keynote talks from astronauts and leading space experts, the event offers a unique opportunity to connect with like-minded enthusiasts and contribute to the emerging space technology field.
With a broad interdisciplinary focus, SpaceCHI welcomes a wide range of submissions related to the design and use of technologies for space (including work-in-progress and position papers). All accepted submissions will be published by Dagstuhl Publishing as part of the Open Access Series in Informatics.
“Conferences like SpaceCHI serve as vital platforms for cross-disciplinary collaboration, promoting a more inclusive and dynamic space industry,” explains SpaceCHI chair and MIT Media Lab scientist Leonie Bensch.
“This is a unique opportunity to explore how emerging technologies such as Virtual and Extended Reality can redefine and shape the future of spaceflight,” adds SpaceCHI chair and Fraunhofer FIT scientist Tommy Nilsson.
With this in mind, contributions are encouraged from researchers and practitioners across diverse fields, including – but not limited to – human-computer interaction, aerospace engineering, robotics, psychology, medicine and space architecture.
