Ursula Staudinger re-elected as Rector of TUD – Confirmation by the Extended Senate in the first ballot

Matthias Fejes Pressestelle
Technische Universität Dresden

Prof. Ursula Staudinger was re-elected as Rector of TUD Dresden University of Technology for a second term on March 12, 2025. On the first ballot, she received the majority of votes from the members of the Extended Senate, thereby clearly prevailing over her competitor, Prof. André Thess.

“I would like to sincerely extend my gratitude to the members of the Extended Senate for this strong vote and the trust they have placed in me. am very pleased that we will continue together on the path we have taken towards becoming a globally-oriented and regionally anchored University of Excellence for the 21st century,” said Prof. Ursula Staudinger. Furthermore, the incumbent and future Rector emphasized that TUD is a university with an exceptionally broad range of fields of study and disciplines, and that it will continue to make a decisive contribution to providing solutions for global challenges in research, teaching and transfer. Such challenges include the climate crisis, scarcity of resources, energy crisis and demographic change. In these fields, TUD will continue to occupy top positions both nationally and internationally.

“Inventive, transformative and engaged together” – this is how Prof. Staudinger outlines her vision for a ‘TUD 2030’ that is well positioned to meet the challenges of our time. She is fully committed to continuing the path taken in the Excellence Strategy: “I am confident that we will successfully conclude the excellent preliminary work for the defense of our excellence status. We will submit the self-assessment report for the Excellence Strategy by the August 1, 2025 deadline and are preparing for the on-site visit in November.” With six Clusters of Excellence and initiatives currently in the final competition – four of which are self-managed – TUD has had an outstanding development in the area of cutting-edge research during the first term of office of the University Executive Board, stated Prof. Staudinger.

This will involve expanding the regional networks within the DRESDEN-concept Science and Innovation Campus and the promotion of structural change in Lusatia with the two major research infrastructure projects CircEcon and Smart Mobility Lab (SML), as well as the DZA large-scale research center. Specific contributions will include the development of an interdisciplinary master's degree program in astrophysics, technology and digitalization and the establishment of corresponding Chairs.

The Rector also mentioned the expansion and intensification of partnerships with top companies such as TSMC and designated international academic partners in India and as part of EUTOPIA – European University Partnership. The expansion of selected international partners within the framework of TUD transCampus will also play a particularly important role. The Rector also emphasized the importance of the Excellence Center TUD|excite, which was founded under her University Executive Board and is providing crucial impetus for the promotion of a start-up culture at TUD under the direction of Prof. Andreas Pinkwart.

These plans for cutting-edge research, transfer and regional development will be accompanied by outstanding programs for early-career researchers and students. The aim is to work with accreditation agencies to accelerate the development of highly attractive degree programs, open them up to new target groups along the lines of lifelong learning, and supplement them with a micro-certificate system. The consistent integration of AI in teaching is intended to train the self-evident but critical handling of this technology. The use of AI in administration will accelerate processes and work flows. Another goal is to overcome the backlog in the structural modernization of the TUD campus.

Ursula Staudinger's second five-year term as Rector of TU Dresden will begin with her appointment by the Saxon State Ministry for Higher Education, Research and the Arts on August 18, 2025.
