Aerosol researcher receives prestigious Copernicus Medal

Claudia Dolle Presse- und Öffentlichkeitsarbeit
Max-Planck-Institut für Chemie

Yafang Cheng from the Max Planck Institute for Chemistry receives the award for her achievements in understanding atmospheric aerosols and their effects on air quality, public health, and climate.

Professor Yafang Cheng has been awarded the 2025 Copernicus Medal. In their letter of congratulation, the Copernicus Gesellschaft e. V. emphasized that Yafang Cheng’s research has brought fundamental insights, groundbreaking advances, and impactful public outreach in understanding atmospheric aerosols and their effects.

Cheng's research aims to gain a predictive understanding of the origins, interactions, and impact of aerosols in the Earth system and addresses grand challenges of global change in the Anthropocene. To investigate fundamental scientific questions and open up new research avenues, she integrates laboratory experiments and field measurements with the development of innovative instruments, theories, and models, inspiring new directions of research in the global scientific community.

The award ceremony, a laudation by Prof. Ulrich Pöschl, a medal lecture by Prof. Yafang Cheng, and a reception will take place on Tuesday, 29 April 2025, at 19:00 in the Austria Center Vienna (Room K2) in the course of the EGU General Assembly 2025. The event is open to all participants of the EGU General Assembly; all interested colleagues are invited and welcome to attend.

Professor Yafang Cheng is an internationally leading scholar in the fields of aerosol science and Earth system chemistry. Since 2024 she is director of the newly founded Aerosol Chemistry Department of the Max Planck Institute for Chemistry in Mainz. She is also a guest professor at Peking University (PKU), an elected Member of Academia Europaea (AE), Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) and American Geophysical Union (AGU), and Editor-in-Chief of the AGU flagship Journal of Geophysical Research (JGR) – Atmospheres.

    About the Copernicus Gesellschaft

Copernicus Gesellschaft e.V. is a non-profit society, registered in Göttingen, and was founded in 1988 at the former Max Planck Institute for Aeronomy (today Max Planck Institute for Solar System Research). The aim was to promote international collaboration in the geo and space sciences. The Copernicus Gesellschaft annually honors one outstanding researcher for their ingenious, innovative work in the geosciences or in the planetary and space sciences.
