The Herzog August Library (HAB) is celebrating a special anniversary: for 50 years, it has been offering researchers from around the world the opportunity to work with the unique holdings of the Wolfenbüttel Library through its fellowship programs.
The first fellows began their scholarly work in Wolfenbüttel in the spring of 1975. In accordance with the program’s original guidelines, a scholar who had already completed his doctorate was selected. Today, the library awards research fellowships to applicants at all stages of their academic careers. The funding opportunities are aimed at the international research community and are interdisciplinary in nature. In addition to the scholarly quality of the proposed project, a key requirement for receiving a fellowship is a clear connection to the HAB’s collections.
Over the years, the program has become a vital engine for international academic exchange. During their time together in Wolfenbüttel, researchers form connections that often remain strong long after their stay. Thus, Wolfenbüttel is not only a place of intellectual exchange but, for many, also a site of lasting memory and a formative experience in their academic journey.
The first fellowships in the 1970s were initially funded by the Stiftung Volkswagenwerk, which also appointed a scholarly advisory board to select the fellows. After the Lower Saxony state parliament voted in favor of continuing the program in 1978, the state assumed responsibility for it in 1981. Over the years, additional fellowship programs have been established, particularly through the initiatives of private sponsors. As a result, the fellowship program of the Herzog August Bibliothek is not only a testament to successful institutional support but also evidence of the commitment of many partners who continue to enable and enrich scholarly work in Wolfenbüttel to this day.
