Professor Dr. Gert Heinrich, Senior Research Professor at TU Dresden and former head of the Institute of Polymer Materials at the Leibniz Institute of Polymer Research Dresden (abbrev. IPF in German), has been honored with the 2025 Charles Goodyear Medal by the Rubber Division of the American Chemical Society (ACS). Established in 1941 to commemorate Charles Goodyear, the inventor of rubber vulcanization, the medal recognizes individuals who have made significant contributions to innovation and advancement in the rubber industry.
Professor Heinrich received the award at the ACS Rubber Division’s Spring Technical Meeting in Lake Buena Vista, Florida, on March 5. In his Charles Goodyear Medal address “Rubberiomics: A Holistic Approach to Elastomers and Elastomer Products,” he presented his interdisciplinary research approach, which integrates statistical thermodynamics of polymers, quantum mechanics, canonical mechanics, continuum mechanics, and even sociology to gain a comprehensive understanding of elastomer composition and behavior in a product—particularly in tires.
Professor Heinrich’s career spans over five decades. After leading materials research at Continental AG, he transitioned to academia in 2002, becoming head of IPF’s Institute of Polymer Materials and later serving as Chair of Polymer Materials at TU Dresden until his retirement in 2017. His many accolades include the H.F. Mark Medal, awarded by the Austrian Research Institute for Chemistry and Technology (abbrev. OFI in German) in October 2024, recognizing his exceptional contributions to polymer science.
