The Additive Manufacturing Cooperative Research Centre (AMCRC) is receiving $58M (AUD) in Australian Commonwealth Funding to support the Centre’s $271M (AUD) Research and Development to promote additive manufacturing as a future technology within Australian Industry. As an Associate Partner and the only Fraunhofer Institute in the AMCRC, Fraunhofer IAPT will contribute its expertise along the additive manufacturing production route to projects with AMCRC partners from research and industry. The initiative will aim for a more sustainable and globally competitive production for Australia's economy.

Hamburg-Bergedorf / Germany, May 8, 2025 – The Fraunhofer Institute for Additive Production Technologies IAPT industrializes additive manufacturing in national and international research and industry collaborations. Fraunhofer IAPT, as the sole Fraunhofer Institute partner of the AMCRC, will be actively contributing to the international collaborative research efforts of Australia’s Additive Manufacturing Cooperative Research Centre. The Australian Commonwealth Government has selected the AMCRC as one of three Cooperative Research Centres (CRCs) in Round 25 of the CRC program, which has supported science and research translation in Australia for over 30 years. According to the AMCRC, the success is based on the efforts of consortium partners such as Australian universities, government organizations, and international industry partners, including Fraunhofer IAPT.

Fraunhofer IAPT as Associate Partner of the AMCRC: A Comprehensive View of the Additive Manufacturing Process Chain

The AMCRC unites Australia's research community and companies to build a world-leading AM ecosystem along the entire value chain. Fraunhofer IAPT participates with its expertise across the entire additive manufacturing process chain in projects related to research, industrial transfer, and training. Alongside other AMCRC partners, Fraunhofer IAPT empowers Australia's industry to accelerate innovations, explore new business models, utilize sustainable materials, and certify additive manufacturing.

Prof. Dr. Ingomar Kelbassa, Institute Director of the Fraunhofer IAPT, emphasizes: «By solving current challenges, we bring AM technologies into industrial application, increase productivity, and contribute to resource conservation and resilience. We are pleased to be the only Fraunhofer Institute to be part of the AMCRC and to partner with Australia's manufacturing enterprises on the path to sustainable production and global competitive advantages.»

Leadership in Additive Manufacturing and Sustainable Production

The AMCRC aims to advance the Australian manufacturing industry through the development of innovative technologies. The partners are working together to accelerate the adoption of advanced 3D printing technologies to position Australia as a global leader in sustainable manufacturing.

In the 25th round of the CRC program by the Australian government, the AMCRC has now received a funding commitment. With funding of 58 million AUD, the Australian government supports the development and commercialisation of additive manufacturing as a key technology. Industry and research partner contributions to the AMCRC, both cash and in-kind, amount to 213 million AUD.

Simon Marriott, Director and AMCRC Bid Lead, underscores: «Additive manufacturing is one of the most significant technological advancements in manufacturing. It is reshaping industries by enabling the rapid creation of complex geometries and customised products across all sectors, including defence, aerospace, healthcare, automotive and construction. Additive manufacturing is now transforming industrial processes and supply chains, resulting in reduced lead times and material costs, ushering in a new era of efficient and sustainable manufacturing.»

According to AMCRC, operational commencement of the cooperations under the current funding is set to start July 1, 2025. This includes, among other things, the certification of aircraft parts and tools for the mobility sector, the development and production of large components, as well as the maintenance of facilities for the defense sector or in the field of renewable energies for lightweight parts for both production and repair in renewable energy generation and supporting infrastructure.

    About Additive Manufacturing CRC

Additive Manufacturing CRC has a consortium of 101 partners set to establish a world-class additive manufacturing ecosystem spanning the entire value chain. Their sustainable manufacturing will reduce carbon footprints across our supply chains, as well as maintenance and transport costs, whilst increasing engagement and productivity.
