Successful with two Clusters of Excellence: the RESIST and Hearing4all research alliances will receive a total of around 120 million euros.
The Excellence Commission of the German federal and state governments today announced its selection of the clusters of excellence to be funded in future. Hannover Medical School (MHH) was in the running with three cluster applications, two of which will receive the coveted funding from the pot of the central funding instrument for top-level research in Germany.
The two existing clusters of excellence RESIST on infection research and the Hearing4All cluster of excellence on hearing at the University of Oldenburg, in which the MHH plays a key role, will receive a total of around 120 million euros in funding over the next seven years. This means that the MHH is now eligible to apply for the second funding line of the Excellence Strategy and may submit an application for funding as a University of Excellence (ExU).
Congratulations from Science Minister Falko Mohrs
"This is a strong result that opens up many opportunities for Lower Saxony. We have succeeded in defending Lower Saxony's number of clusters of excellence in a tough competition. Hannover Medical School has achieved a great success with two clusters," says Lower Saxony's Science Minister Falko Mohrs. "As a result, we have three universities in Lower Saxony continuing the competition to become a University of Excellence. All clusters make our state even more attractive for bright minds, enable considerable investment in research and make us fit for the future. As the state of Lower Saxony, we will provide them with the best possible support. My thanks and congratulations go above all to the scientists involved: this is their success and their achievement. And even for the clusters that were not successful in the final selection, research will continue at the highest level. The projects and their high quality were expressly recognised by the Commission today. As a state, we will continue to support them."
MHH strives for University of Excellence status
‘I would like to congratulate the RESIST and Hearing4all teams on this great success,’ said MHH President Prof Dr Denise Hilfiker-Kleiner. "With these two Clusters of Excellence and the centres for pioneering diagnostic and therapeutic approaches at the molecular and cellular level, for which we have just raised 20 million euros from the zukunft.niedersachsen funding programme, MHH now has a strong foundation on which we can and will build an application for funding as a University of Excellence. My vision is an MHH as a national and international beacon for cutting-edge research, as a magnet for the best minds, as the best place to work and as a guarantor of forward-looking healthcare."
RESIST: Customised strategies against infectious diseases
The RESIST team is working towards the goal of better understanding individual susceptibility to infections in order to be able to prevent, diagnose and treat infections on a ‘customised’ basis. "The further promotion of our research means important long-term help for people who can be particularly harmed by infections. These include newborns, senior citizens and people whose immune system is suppressed for therapeutic reasons," says RESIST spokesperson Prof Dr Reinhold Förster.
The RESIST team has already achieved numerous research successes. These centre around sepsis (blood poisoning) in newborns, the SARS-CoV-2 vaccination and strategies against multi-resistant hospital germs, for example. For the new funding period, the team has reorganised and restructured the previous topics and highlighted other key areas and future plans, such as new infection models and organoids - three-dimensional models that mimic human organs. In addition, machine learning and artificial intelligence are to be increasingly utilised in data analysis and integration.
Hearing4all: leading position in hearing research further expanded
The Hearing4all cluster is continuing its success story in hearing loss research. Under the motto ‘Hearing4all.connects’, the research alliance between the University of Oldenburg, the MHH and Leibniz Universität Hannover is expanding its focus. The researchers are investigating genetic approaches to prognosis and therapy, developing AI systems to differentiate between sound sources and working on hearing aids as a ‘health centre on the ear’. The reality of life takes centre stage: multilingualism, everyday life and social interactions are taken into account. The network combines medical, scientific and technical disciplines. ‘The funding from the DFG is a strong signal of the relevance of our research and a great vote of confidence in our concept,’ says Prof Dr Dr Andrej Kral (MHH). ‘Our aim is to develop innovative therapies that not only alleviate symptoms, but also specifically address the causes of hearing disorders.’
International expert review decides on funding
With the Excellence Strategy, the federal and state governments are aiming to sustainably strengthen and further develop Germany as a centre of science. Internationally competitive research networks are being established as part of the Clusters of Excellence funding line. The Excellence Commission, consisting of international scientists and the federal and state ministers responsible for research, selected a total of 70 Clusters of Excellence worthy of funding from 98 applications submitted - including the two clusters funded at the MHH. The Cluster of Excellence initiative ‘R-CUBE - Organ Regeneration, Repair and Replacement’ was not selected.
