Founded in January 2025 and based in Ulm, Germany, the Neudecker-Scott-Foundation is dedicated to advancing the fight against pancreatic cancer. It supports research at Ulm University focused on early detection and prevention of pancreatic cancer, especially its development and metastasis. In line with its mission, the Foundation can provide funding through various avenues including endowed professorships, worldwide research stays and projects on biomarkers for early stage diagnosis.
With an initial endowment of 900,000 Euros, including 200,000 Euros in investment capital, the Neudecker-Scott-Foundation’s first major initiative will co-finance an endowed professorship at Ulm University. The Foundation is dedicated in loving memory to Hedwig Johanna Scott (née Neudecker) who was born on 1 March 1923, in Selb, Germany and passed away on 5 June 2012 in Melbourne, Australia. It was the wish of her son, Henry Maurice Scott, to gift his entire estate to establish this perpetual research fund. The Foundation was ultimately established by Hedwig’s daughter Helene Raya Scott, who was born in Nuremberg, Germany and now lives in Australia.
The inspiration behind the Foundation
“When our mother was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer Henry saw first-hand what a cruel disease it is, not least because so often it is recognised 'too late'. He also saw the dire state of international research funding, especially into early-stage detection. The decision to base this Foundation in southern Germany was largely sentimental. Mum had never given up her German passport, nor did she obtain an Australian one,” says Helene and continues: “After Henry's diagnosis with Stage 4 melanoma, the search for a suitable research institute became more urgent. It was Maggie Blanks, CEO of PCRF (Pancreatic Cancer Research Fund), a UK charity, who suggested contacting Professor Thomas Seufferlein at Ulm University Hospital. Close family friends who now live in Stuttgart made a visit on our behalf. It was agreed that Ulm 'ticked all the boxes' – excellent facilities along with a research approach that welcomed blue-sky thinking, innovation and collaboration. And it was in southern Germany.”
A legacy of dedication
“We are very grateful to the benefactor Henry Maurice Scott and the family for supporting medical cancer research at Ulm University with the establishment of the Foundation. The Neudecker-Scott-Foundation is a lasting testament to their foresight and generosity,” says Professor Thomas Wirth, Dean of the Medical Faculty. “Ulm is one of the leading research locations in Germany for pancreatic cancer. We are working hard to ensure that findings from basic research find their way to the patient's bedside, so that patients benefit from innovative therapies as quickly as possible,” emphasises Professor Thomas Seufferlein, Medical Director of the Department of Internal Medicine I at Ulm University Hospital. “The Foundation strengthens our work on the molecular mechanisms of carcinogenesis and helps us to develop more effective methods for early detection and treatment, so that we can successfully combat this deadly disease in the future,” Seufferlein continues.
On 11 February 2025, the first Board of the Foundation held its constituent meeting. Members are founder Helene Raya Scott, Medical Dean Professor Thomas Wirth, Medical Director Professor Thomas Seufferlein, and lawyer Katrin Maria Müller-Rohrhirsch. The first major initiative to support pancreatic cancer research at Ulm University will be the establishment of an endowed professorship that will soon be advertised internationally.
