PD Dr. Luminita Gatejel, a historian at the University of Regensburg, is conducting research on the history of the Romanian floodplain landscapes in the modern era.The scholar undertakes a comprehensive analysis of the multifaceted social, economic, and environmental distribution struggles that are inextricably linked to a broad spectrum of divergent conceptions concerning the significance and advantages associated with floodplains.Luminita Gatejel is now being funded by the prestigious Heisenberg Programme of the German Research Foundation.
PD Dr. Luminita Gatejel is a historian of Southeastern Europe at the Chair of Southeast and East European History at the University of Regensburg. She conducts research on the history of technology and the environment in Southeastern Europe. One of her current projects investigates ecological transformation and associated social conflicts along the Danube, particularly in Romania during the 20th century. The German Research Foundation (DFG) is supporting Luminita Gatejel with almost 700,000 euros through 2030 as part of its renowned Heisenberg Programme.
The project involves expanding and straightening rivers to support shipping traffic and the economy while saving and restoring ecosystems. Even today, measures for "a fast Danube," such as the Fast Danube project in Romania and Bulgaria, clash with nature restoration laws as part of the EU Commission's Green Deal. Romania has a unique history with regard to its river landscapes, a topic that the scholar has examined in recent years at the History Department of the Leibniz Institute for East and Southeast European Studies (IOS) in Regensburg.
In her Heisenberg position, Luminita Gatejel is telling the story of Romania's floodplain landscapes in the modern era "from below" in a major study. The historian analyzes the diverse social, economic, and environmental distribution struggles associated with different ideas about the importance and benefits of floodplains. This is because ecosystems along flowing waters have repeatedly been given new forms and purposes — processes that are still ongoing today. To analyze their history, Luminita Gatejel reports that she requires the cooperation of specialists from various fields, including anthropology, geography, and engineering.
Luminita Gatejel's recently completed habilitation at the University of Regensburg, during which she led an international joint project of the Leibniz Association, laid the foundation for the Danube project. The DFG funding also supports Gatejel in another project investigating the transnational history of relations and interdependencies in Europe. She is examining the politically sensitive topic of humanitarian aid for Eastern Europe in the 1980s and 1990s.
Her analyses in this field draw from her years of research and teaching at the University of Augsburg, where she served as acting head of the Bukovina Institute. The scholar is currently looking forward to deepening her collaboration with international colleagues in her field, including those at Trinity College Dublin and Maastricht University.
