"IDAS-PRO" research project: Effective drone defense system for police forces and KRITIS

Christina Haberland Wissenschaftskommunikation

How can police security forces successfully detect and defend against drones? The research project "IDAS-PRO" provides an answer to this question: During the major final demonstration in Mosbach, Baden-Württemberg, the drone defense system developed over two and a half years was successfully showcased in realistic test scenarios. The attending users particularly noted the flexible deployment options of the overall system. "IDAS-PRO" can assist in many threat scenarios, including the protection of critical infrastructures (KRITIS), industrial facilities, or in a military context.

"The results shown are very impressive," commented a spokesperson for the Federal Police, which was associated with the project as a partner on the user side. "I have great respect for those involved in bringing so many components together – a thoroughly successful overall concept." Users are rarely as extensively and closely involved in a project as they are in "IDAS-PRO," which stands for "Innovative Drone Defense System": In addition to the BKA as a project partner, six other agencies and organizations with security responsibilities – the Federal Police, the police forces of Baden-Württemberg, Brandenburg, North Rhine-Westphalia, and Rhineland-Palatinate, as well as the LKA Bavaria – provided valuable insights based on their experiences from everyday police work and continuously integrated these into the development. "That's a significant advantage," emphasized an LKA employee at the conclusion of the project. "Our wish is that these results can now be quickly implemented in the field so we can utilize them."

The best of four previous projects

"IDAS-PRO" is one of the flagship projects of the Federal Ministry for Research, Technology, and Space (BMFTR, formerly BMBF). It builds upon a total of four previously funded projects. As part of a Best-of-4 initiative, a representative user group identified the components that were further developed into a demonstrator as close to production as possible. This demonstrator encompasses three tasks in the context of drone defense: detection, verification, and intervention. This solution offers security agencies a cost-effective, open, and modular system designed for a wide range of applications, enabling the defense against drones during attacks or unauthorized intrusions into defined security zones. Thus, it fully achieves the defined goal of the project.

    The architecture of "IDAS-PRO"

"IDAS-PRO" consists of a multimodal sensor suite comprising various radar systems, radio direction finders, remote ID sensors and miniaturized cameras. Automated calibration was implemented as a mission-relevant feature for camera sensors. Two effectors, a jammer with camera and an interceptor drone, are available to defend against the drones.

All technical components are connected to a core system consisting of sensor data fusion and situation display. The core system was developed by Fraunhofer FKIE, which took on the co-lead and scientific management of the project. As stipulated by the BMFTR, the project was coordinated by an industrial partner: in the case of "IDAS-PRO", Elettronica GmbH, based in Meckenheim near Bonn. In "AMBOS," one of the four previous projects, the two partners already worked side by side under the leadership of the FKIE.

Definition of test scenarios by the BKA

Key prerequisites for the success of the demonstrator were a thorough analysis of user requirements and the description of the resulting target architecture of the system at the start of the project. The BKA was responsible for this: "We also defined the test scenarios exactly as we would use the solution," emphasized the spokesperson for the authority.

On the day of the final demonstration, "IDAS-PRO" successfully mastered all the tasks assigned to it. "Above all, the decision support is a novelty in drone defense systems. Police forces don't have much time in the event of a threat situation and need support in deciding the question: Can I use an effector to defend against a drone?" said the BKA spokesperson.

For him, the software implementation of "IDAS-PRO" in the form of universally usable apps is another new unique selling point of the solution. It keeps the overall system open and flexible for all types of user groups and scenarios.

Hans Peter Stuch, "IDAS-PRO" project manager at Fraunhofer FKIE, explains: "The solution can also be used in many related areas, for example for the protection of KRITIS, public and private compounds, large events or even in the military sector." Due to the growing threat posed by drones, the demand for systems to detect and defend against drones is constantly increasing. Stuch: "We therefore assume that the results will soon be used as products."
