WZB researcher Vanessa Boese-Schlosser wins ERC Starting Grant 2025

Eva Henkel-Akdemir Abteilung Kommunikation
Wissenschaftszentrum Berlin für Sozialforschung gGmbH

Vanessa Boese-Schlosser has been awarded a Starting Grant from the European Research Council (ERC) for her work on regime types and socioeconomic interactions. The ERC announced this today in Brussels. With a budget of €1.5 million for a period of up to five years, the ERC Starting Grant is the most highly endowed and prestigious individual grant for early-career researchers in Europe.

In her ERC project "Waves of Regime Transformation," Vanessa Boese-Schlosser investigates how democracy and autocracy have spread worldwide in wave-like patterns since 1900. The focus is on the global, regional, and national factors driving these political upheavals—from sudden shocks and international imitation to the "zeitgeist," i.e., the prevailing understanding of democracy in a given era. The project aims to gain a better understanding of the dynamics of regime change and thus provide important impetus for politics and society.

Boese-Schlosser has been working at the WZB Berlin Social Science Center since December 2021 and, since April 2023, as a postdoctoral research fellow in the Research Department Transformations of Democracy. She is also a research associate at the Varieties of Democracy (V-Dem) Institute at the University of Gothenburg. Previously, she held assistant professorships at the Geschwister-Scholl-Institut of Political Science at Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität München and the University of Gothenburg.

Nicola Fuchs-Schündeln, President of the WZB: “I would like to congratulate Vanessa Boese-Schlosser on this outstanding achievement. It is well-deserved recognition for her excellent and continuous work in the field of democracy research. As an economist, I am particularly impressed by her research on the relationship between regime type and economic development. This is groundbreaking research that could not be more urgent given the current challenges facing democracies worldwide. I am also extremely pleased that the funds will allow her to set up her own research group at the WZB. This will enable Vanessa Boese-Schlosser to intensify her research and thus contribute significantly to further raising the profile of the WZB as a central institution for democracy research in Germany and Europe. With her interdisciplinary research, she is an excellent fit for the WZB."

The ERC is a European Union institution that has been promoting basic research in Europe since 2007—regardless of subject area or application, and based solely on scientific excellence. The ERC Starting Grant supports outstanding young scientists in Europe who want to establish their own independent research group at a European institution. The aim is to promote young talent at an early stage, strengthen excellence-based research, and secure Europe's competitiveness in cutting-edge research.
