In silent mourning for Prof. Dominik Wortig

Dr. Manuela Rutsatz Stabsstelle Kommunikation und Marketing
Universität Augsburg

It is with great sadness that we bid farewell to Prof. Dominik Wortig, an outstanding tenor, dedicated singing teacher and passionate director of the Leopold Mozart College of Music at the University of Augsburg. His sudden and untimely death leaves a painful void – not only in the musical and academic world, but above all in the hearts of all those who knew and appreciated him personally.

Prof. Wortig was far more than an outstanding singer, teacher and institute director. He was a personality of extraordinary human depth, characterised by sincere affection, passion and tireless commitment to music and the people with whom he shared it.

Since taking office in 2017, he has shaped the Leopold Mozart College of Music with his visionary spirit and exceptional personal commitment. He oversaw the restructuring process, which resulted in a refined concept and a new name. He transformed the institute into a vibrant, international hub of musical encounter and excellence. Under his leadership, the Leopold Mozart College of Music became a place where musical education opened up new career paths and a space where personalities could grow.

For many of his students, Prof. Wortig was not only a lecturer, but also a companion, a mentor and often a source of support. His door was always open – for musical questions as well as personal concerns. His teaching was characterised by respect, warmth and a deep understanding of the individual paths of his students, who came to him from all over the world.

As an artist, Dominik Wortig was at home on the great stages of Europe and worldwide. His tenor voice was radiant, nuanced and full of expression – a reflection of his inner attitude to music. And he never saw his art as an end in itself. Rather, for him it was a medium for connecting, moving, touching and remembering.

He brought people together in countless projects, ensembles, concerts and collaborations – both within and outside the university. He was the artistic driving force behind new concert formats such as the cloister concerts in the “Barfüßer-Church” in Augsburg and series such as the “Operetta Café”. Dominik Wortig was a passionate networker and always thought of music as something communal. His work was driven by the desire to bring out the best in people – both artistically and personally.

His death leaves not only a painful void, but also a lasting legacy that the University of Augsburg honours. Our thoughts are with his family, friends, colleagues and especially his students, for whom he was an indispensable anchor.
