The German Center for Diabetes Research (DZD) has published its new annual report for 2023/2024. The report shows how scientific findings are being translated into medical practice—with the aim of sustainably improving the prevention, early detection, and treatment of diabetes. The annual report also presents current data and facts about the DZD, news from the seven main research topics, and noteworthy findings from diabetes research.
The DZD pursues a clear goal: New research findings should be put into practice quickly and effectively. In our current annual report, we present selected examples of translational successes from page 10 onwards.
From the lab to people
Findings from the Prediabetes Lifestyle Intervention Study show that blood sugar normalization in people with prediabetes offers the best protection against a manifestation of the disease. These insights are now also being incorporated into new medical guidelines and are strengthening evidence-based prevention.
With dual and polyagonists, an innovative mechanism of action has been developed for treating people with type 2 diabetes and obesity. The first drug based on this concept has already been approved, representing a significant advance in therapy.
Type 1 diabetes (T1D) is an autoimmune disease that usually begins in childhood or adolescence. In the Fr1da study, children between the ages of 2 and 10 are being tested for specific autoantibodies. If T1D is detected in the preclinical stage, targeted care can be started early on—even before symptoms appear. This improves the course of the disease.
These are just some of the examples presented in the annual report. They impressively demonstrate how the DZD is shaping the path from the laboratory to practical application—with the aim of sustainably improving the quality of life of people with diabetes or even preventing the development of the disease.
Seven main research topics
In addition to the translational research successes, the annual report provides insights into the seven main research topics (Academies). Other areas covered include reports on DZD data management, the DZD Clinical Research Platform, and the many internal and external cooperation and networking opportunities provided by the research network.
Another focus is on the promotion of young talent: With the DZD NEXT program, the DZD provides targeted support for young medical and clinical scientists and strengthens their translational skills. In addition, the DZD works closely with its Citizens’ and Patients’ Advisory Board in order to more strongly incorporate the perspectives of people with diabetes into its research. The transparent communication of research results, such as via the national information portal diabinfo.de, is an essential part of the DZD’s work.
The information is rounded off with figures and data from 2023 and 2024.
