Safe production in uncertain times

Sabine Nitz Stabsstelle für Presse, Kommunikation und Marketing
Universität Siegen

The two international conferences CARV and MCPC at the University of Siegen focused on future industry issues: How can we adapt to global disruptions in production and supply chains and how can intelligent systems be used to manufacture customized products?

Researchers from eleven countries came to the University of Siegen for the combined CARV (Changeable, Agile, Reconfigurable and Virtual Production Conference) and MCPC (Mass Customization and Personalization) conferences. The more than 100 participants spent four days discussing the entrepreneurial and production technology challenges of the future. The international events were organized by the Siegen Institute for Production Technology (PROTECH) and the Chair of Manufacturing Automation and Assembly at the University of Siegen (FAMS). Prof. Dr.-Ing. Martin Manns chaired both conferences.

Production and its supply chains are increasingly confronted with global disruptions, which also lead to more uncertainties for the industry. Prof. Manns: "We need to establish new paradigms to achieve greater resilience and open up opportunities for innovation in both technical and organizational areas." The conferences were therefore held under the joint title "New paradigms for anticipated uncertainty".

The CARV conference on agile, reconfigurable and virtual production offered experts from academia, industry and research institutes the opportunity to present and discuss the latest scientific contributions to production technology. The conference, sponsored by the International Academy of Production Engineering (CIRP) and the German Research Foundation (DFG), took place for the tenth time. Topics included global production systems and collaboration within global networks, additive manufacturing for intelligent production, human-machine interaction, cobots and sensor integration for intelligent automation as well as learning factories and intelligent laboratories.

The MCPC conference took place for the twelfth time. Funding was provided by the German Research Foundation (DFG). The participants had the opportunity to exchange views on current scientific contributions to customer-specific products and the associated business and production systems. Topics included intelligent products, services and product-service systems, sustainability, the circular economy and mass customization as well as resilient supply chains.

Two scientific papers were honored at the end of the four-day conference. The CARV Best Paper Award went to Niklas Grambow, Lisa-Marie Fenner, Dingyuan Wan, Jörg Krüger and Kevin Haninger from the Fraunhofer Institute for Production Systems and Design Technology. Title: Anomaly Detection in Industrial Robotic Assembly with Variational Autoencoders. The MCPC Best Paper Award went to Ludovica Diletta Naldi, Riccardo Venturi, Francesco Gabriele Galizia, Marco Bortolini, Matteo Gabellini from the University of Bologna. Title: Managing variety in the era of mass customization: a decisional algorithm for product platform design.
