With the Korczak Scholarship, the Janusz Korczak Foundation Bremen (JKSB) has been supporting equal opportunities at the University of the Arts Bremen (HfK) since this year. The scholarship is awarded to students who are in the final semesters of their standard period of study. Thanks to the financial support, they can devote more time to completing their studies. The successful acquisition of the JKSB as a new sponsor marks an important step for the HfK, directly benefiting students and their artistic, pedagogical and scientific education.
Following the application and selection process in early summer 2025, the Korczak Scholarship was awarded for the first time to eight committed HfK students from the departments of Art and Design and Music. They will receive up to €800 per month for one of their final semesters and, thanks to this financial support, will be able to concentrate on successfully completing their studies.
The Korczak Scholarship 2025 was awarded to eight students:
- Xinyue Feng (KPA B.M. Elementary Music Education/Piano)
- Kira Ronja Häring (M.A. Integrated Design)
- Yan Xing Lee (KA B.M. Violin)
- Nikolas Divall Archer Rejto (KA M.M. Basso Continuo)
- Leon Sahiti (Postgraduate programme in Fine Arts)
- Polet Silva Lorca (KA B.M. Viola)
- Abdulghaffar Tammaa (Postgraduate programme in Fine Arts)
- Charlotte Uekermann (Diploma in Fine Arts)
Around 60 applications were reviewed by the selection committee, consisting of two foundation members, the rector, the dean of the Art and Design Department and the dean of the Music Department at the HfK, and a shortlist was proposed. The foundation then selected the eight scholarship recipients from this shortlist. In addition to social aspects, the students' commitment to their studies and beyond was a decisive factor. Gertrud Janzer-Bertzbach, Inge Grothus and Martin Bertzbach from the Janusz Korczak Foundation handed over the scholarships to the students in person and talked to them about their goals, areas of study and planned final projects.
Prof. Dr. Mirjam Boggasch, Rector of the HfK, emphasises the importance of the newly established collaboration with the foundation: "The joint awarding of the Korczak Scholarship is a great enrichment for the university and especially for the students. Especially in the final phase of their studies, many students are confronted with financial challenges. In this situation, the scholarship offers valuable support for financing artistic final projects and practice-oriented semesters. It thus represents an important step towards equal opportunities at the HfK, not only by providing financial security during the final phase of studies, but also by enabling students to achieve their individual study goals. We congratulate the scholarship recipients, wish them every success in completing their studies and thank the JKSB for its generous commitment."
The Korczak scholarships for HfK students are awarded annually. Applications are open to enrolled HfK students in the standard period of study in bachelor's, master's or diploma programmes, concert examination programmes or master class programmes. The next application phase begins in April 2026.
